problem started with battery going dead. vr replaced, alternator replaced battery replaced. then the engine just loses fire sometimes it runs an hour sometimes 3 seconds. ballast resistors replaced coil replaced pickup in distributor replaced. cap and rotor replaced.i'm lost.

What car? My recent similar problem was the bulkhead connector. 69 Coronet. Gently remove the 3 terminals and spray the $hit out of them with electrical contact cleaner. Re-install.

I agree that you have a wiring problem. Start with the ignition switch and work forward towards the bulkhead connections. If you don't have a wiring diagram www.mymopar.com has everything you need in the tech section. When the car refuses to start is going to be the time to figure out what is going on. When it dies do you have 12V or more feeding the ballast resistor? If the voltage looks good all of the way to the ECU/coil/MSD/whatever you should look at.....

wait a minute...

Is this thing running points or electronic ignition?

If it was running ok before the battery/alt. problem then more than likely it was something you disturbed. With old wiring you can have a connector on the end that looks good but the wire is broken at the connector. It is time to break out the ohm meter and start taking readings and cleaning and tightening connections. I had a problem like this years ago and the factory connector that was on the + side of the coil was bad. It drove me nuts. Good luck.

I had a similar problem. Turned out to be a 2 week old ignition condensor went bad.

electronic ignition, 68 roadrunner with a 440. the darn thing may run for 20 min. or 2 seconds. but it always starts right back up. thanks.

I'd try a different ecu. Does sound like sound like something heating up and disconnecting, so it could be the wiring.

Or 200 miles. It was the bulkhead connector for me. Unpredictable.
