Was curious if anyone could give me a ballpark figure on a rear end rebuild. I've got a 489 in my 70 Charger that as far as I know is all stock. The car came stock w/ a 383 2bbl but the previous owner put a 440 in it but he didn't touch the rear end. I want to put 3.73 gears in it and figured it would make sense to do a complete rebuild while I was at it so I bought the parts to do it and realized that this might be a job for a professional. So has anyone had a recent rebuild on an 8.75? I called the shop that I want to do the work but the guy I need to talk to is out until next week.

Had mine done last year- these numbers are off the top of my head so maybe I'm off a bit... $200 for gears, maybe $120 for rebuild kit (I think?), $400 or so for a sure grip (new) and like $100-$150 labor here in NJ. My sure grip was toast so I bought a fresh one and the whole job cost me $800 or so. I went with the crush sleeve eliminator as well, for added strength and reduced pain in the arse down the road.

There is 0.0, NOTHING to make any added strength by not using a crush sleeve....

Neither of those make a difference to strength, there is nothing they could do to add strength.

The only thing to add strength are larger studs , steel caps, modified cases, mikroniting...... crush sleeve or the elim do nothing for strength.

Depending what you need for your diff it can be as little $600 or as much as $1000 depending if you want even better than what the factory put in it.

I just had a 489 case gone through. NEW 3.55 gears, new bearings and new clutches installed in a used SG case. $660. A buddy had another 489 redone using 3.91 gears and a trac-lock diff. He spent almost $900. The new differential was what pushed him to that total since the same shop did both 3rd members.
