Hi Guys,

I bought a '66 charger and it came with a 400 stroker on the side. Its a '74 400 block, bored out to "4.480, has a forged 440 crank, ross racing 10.5 to 1 pistons. Now my question is which heads would i use? i want the overall CR in the 10's if that possible because i wanted to use a big cam i.e. 509 cam. i was leaning towards the edelbrock rpm's but don't know which ones as in 84,72,64CC's etc. First engine I'm building, much advice needed!

thanks

Well hi there BrandonBombay, welcome to the forum! :wav: Why not head over to the welcome section and introduce yourself. Tell us about the rest of your Charger and why you're into mopars.

Anyway, if you want Edelbrock heads, why not contact them and see what they say about cam and compression? I'm sure they'd be happy to advise, and let you know what exhaust and intake options would help out too. They might want to know your car weight, gearing and transmission type, and your intended usage, just the basics.

All that aside, if you search on here you'll find quite a few engine builds of various sizes and power levels, you'll probably find out a few good ideas.

4.480" bore seems a little big for a 400 block. Maybe 4.375-4.380"? What is the deck height? Exactly which part number Ross piston? If it is the Ross 99494 or 99495 (the one I use), with the 84 cc head, .010" deck height and 8519PT1 head gasket you'll be around 10.0-10.2:1

What do you want from this ? 13's, 12's, 10's or 14 mpg, 18 mpg, 6 mpg

.

Photon440, Thanks! will do! thanks for the advice, really appreciate it!

IQ52: yeah i called the guy who i bought the car from, he double checked and said its "4.375 but he doesn't know the deck height and neither do I. the ross pistons are the 99494!

SIROADRNR: Thanks Bud will do!

SuperShafts: MPG doesn't really matter!

Okay, so you are probably around 10:1 with the 84 cc Edelbrock head. I can tell you this, I ran the 509 cam in a 440 block w/ 7.8:1 compression using some ported 516 factory iron heads and it made 449 HP. The OOTB Edelbrock head flows approximately what those ported 516 heads did. The OOTB Stealth heads do not flow as good as the Edelbrocks.

What about the rest.... there were 2 questions there

What do you want from this ? 13's, 12's, 10's or 14 mpg, 18 mpg, 6 mpg
