My 1968 Coronet 500

Nice score, that's a really nice looking Coronet. Have you had time to look it over real good because it sure looks really solid in the pics. Congrats
 
Its pretty solid,

Its going to need a trunk floor, LT lower qtr patch, patches at the rear window corners, a couple small patches in the floor, and some creative patching on the trunk lid and tail lamp panel (or replacement if I can find them).

Doors, Fenders, front inner stucture and rails are all super nice.
 
After about 10 cans of brake cleaner...

The engine is almost clean enough to start pulling parts off of. I need to invent some kind of thick, gel degreaser that can be brushed on and then hosed off with solvent. Having to keep anything with water away from the engine is a real PITA.

Been a little while since I updated,

Still plugging away. I my transmission, it an 18-spline out of a '67. Now I have a scattershield and trans and pedals, now I only need the crossmember, shifter, linkage, z-bar, clutch, flywheel, pressure plate, etc., etc.... and I thought I was almost done gathering parts.

18 spine is a real good start, the rest ive been there and will be again someday but you'll get it! Great project!!
 
Yeah I'm almost going feel a bit silly rowing an 18-spline with a Dana 60 out back,

With a tired old 383 up front, but at least I won't have to do any more upgrades down the road :)

I'm not sure if its an original Texas car,

But it survived 30 years under a tree with a minimum of rust. I bought it from a fellow member in December.
 
No more standard dash!

Thanks to a fellow member, I picked up an A/C rallye dash frame from a '68 Charger. I couldn't resist dropping in the gauge cluster I had already picked up.

Think I found the last AMD Lt. lower qtr patch on the planet....

Not much else going on lately... too hot to work much in the garage.

Nice find on the lower qtr. - it's been hotter than hell here too, I ended up putting a little window AC unit in the shop, it barely keeps up but with fans it's not too bad.

I like that dash, my 67 500 doesn't have the cool clock and all my gauges are square, quite a difference in 67 vs. 68 Coronet 500s.

You do know the drivers side lug nuts loosen the other way right? Not trying to be a jerk. I did the same thing when I was a kid. I don't know how old you are and if you have had a car that old. Looks like a great project. Enjoy!

Actually I think 66 was the last year with the left hand threads.
 
Kinda related to my Coronet,


Been putting my 71 Charger parts car on the Sawzall diet. I've already pulled most of the usable parts off for my 71 Satellite, getting this thing cut up and out of the way will go a huge way towards actually doing some work on the Coronet rather than just taking pics of shiny new parts....

Oh... and how about a pic of some shiny new parts! Got me a brand new Hurst shifter and repop handle for the 500. I got the stuff from Brewers, the handle has very nice chrome, although I was under the impression that the handles had "Hurst" stamped on them... guess that might just be the pistol grips.

I agree and The shifter looks good, any new parts in a build is "inspiration" and we all need that at times.. Good luck getting the saw-zall work completed!

Its been raining all weekend down in my area... perfect weather to stay home in the garage! My Dad came over and helped pull off any parts that he could use on his 1970 318 Challenger, and we drank all my beer :toothy9:


Not much meat left on the bones.... and one step closer to diving into the Coronet, and getting my '71 Road Runner out of the corner.

Decided to retreat from the garage on Monday due to the heat.

So I started working on something I wont need for a while... my hubcaps. Since day one with my Coronet I knew exactly what wheels I wanted to run, steel wheels (widened in the back) with as much rubber as I can stuff in the rear quarters (I hope somebody makes a wide redline radial), capped off with the correct '68 caps... which I nicknamed "orange juicers".

Of course I didn't realize how tough the correct caps were to find at the time. But I got lucky and have been able to scrounge up 9 of them. I have 4 of the tall disc brake caps and 5 of the shorter drum caps. My plan is two keep the two nicest tall ones and the two nicest short ones as spares and run the others... with one short extra.

I've heard horror stories of people losing caps with repop steel wheels and I'm not sure where to buy them from. My current plan is to get 4 originals from Classic Chambered.... and buy two more 15x8s (or maybe 15x10s) when the time for fat tires arrives. Then I can use the extra original wheels as spares for my two cars.

Anyway... after an afternoon of work. I have one looking decent.... man this going to take a while. The reason they look so dull is somebody has slathered them in thick, gooey silver paint. I tried brake fluid first to strip it off.... but it just made the paint stickier and I was wary of using around anything that had paint I wanted to keep.

So I switched to a product call Citristrip.... which fittingly smells like oranges. It works well but is slow... but it doesn't hurt the stainless or stink up the kitchen.

So here is a before and after pic. I still need to bump out some dings, polish out some scrapes, I repaint the black accents.

I actually snagged them on eBay of all places. There are few different vendors that just deal in hubcaps... but they are tedious to look for as most of the sellers actually have no clue what is correct for which year, etc.

I bought the 9 I have in two batches... with the disc and drum caps completely jumbled together.
 
It does have left hand threads.

The guy who painted my car broke three of them off before he decided to call me as ask why they were so hard to remove.

Use oven cleaner instead of carb cleaner from Dollar General. It's cheaper and works better. Just have to rinse it and scrub it to get the residue off that is leaves behind. I used it on my engine bay when I was stripping all the years of black spray paint the previous owner applied. It removed it leaving the factory paint in place.
