4 17 year old boys in a convertible Mini. Ran through a stop sign, drunk. 2 killed, two hurt. The driver is in jail. About 3 miles from our house. Mini Vs. Pine tree=bad. Those cars look like death traps to me, but they say they were going so fast the Mini was airborne for awhile.

The flower bouquets are stacked 4 foot wide and 3 foot high. Every time I go by there are families standing there with their heads down and arms around each other. This loss has everyone taking DUI's more seriously.

I sure wouldn't want to live with that guilt for the rest of my life. What a shame.

It's sad. It happens time and time again. It used to only be boys that did this, but more and more accidents involve girls driving fast nowadays.

IMHO, I think part of the problem is our (lack of) driver's test. In most states, it is all but useless. We teach our kids to stop at a stop sign and count to 10 before they go, and drive S L O W. But do we really teach them about the limits of a car? If we did, I bet we would have fewer of these horrific accidents because at least they would have a better idea when they were near the edge.

Not saying that is the only issue, but I do think that would help.

Hope your community heals - sorry to hear about young people's lives cut short...

Ran through a stop sign
My sister tried to go one today, and I made her stop, I can't afford to be in another accident. So now whenever I am in the car, I try to drive as carefully as I can. I had a uncle that was partially paralyzed by a drunk driver, he was stopped at a light and was rear ended. I have always wondered why people can make such stupid decisions

"Roller Coaster Rd."
Who is naming the roads in your area, and why do they not live near me?

I rode by a wreck the other day. Late model beamer. Totaled. Cut the passenger side door of to be extracated. Ran off the road. Overcorrected. Shot across the left lane and hit a tree. Hard. Drivers door is into the console. 19year old girl. Air lifted to hospital. Critical. Sad.
I lost a brother in 73 in a car wreck. That wasn't a fun Christmas.

May they all rest in peace, it too bad, so sad, so young to die...

I did some truly stupid chit when I was young too,
more in my 20's than in my teens,
just was really lucky...

Now I won't even drive no matter the circumstances or let other people drive
{if I can stop them} if they've been drinking around me...

Lost way to many friends & acquaintances, 4 in HS alone,
2 of those were after one party, in separate wrecks, the same night,
1 guy who was the fasted guy on feet/football/track star in like 4 counties,
was crippled, from the chest down, after getting bent over the back window opening,
when the car he was in rolled, another guy that was riding in the back seat,
is basically a mental capacity of a 2-3 y/o now too, massive head trauma,
when the driver "drunk as a skunk", he walked away with just minor cuts & a few bruises,
It's sad really, all because of alcohol related crap...

Roller Coaster Road is truly up and down like a roller coaster. Narrow and very hilly. Bicyclists love it but I'm surprised they aren't killed on it everyday. I popped over one hill and here was a bicyclist with the baby cart hooked to the back.:angryfire:

I, for one, was no better than those boys. Ive driven drunk many times, sometimes absolutely blind. Hell, ive driven drunk TO WORK. Only difference between them and me when i was in my 20's is luck and the fact that i was smart enough (poor choice of words i guess) to drive slowly. Mostly luck though.

It has nothing to do with drivers ed, imho. Young people are invincible... until they're proven wrong. Always have been, always will be.

Now that i have kids i drive very defensively, because im now the most important man in the world with the most precious cargo.

Very well put there HT413 . . . funny how things change when we have kids . . .

Sorry to hear about the loss - it is so sad when things like this happen . . .

imho the problem isn't so much drivers ed, its the lack of life ed. Teach your kids that actions have consequences. In all aspects of life, not just driving. That's the best you can do. Teach them the value of life and maybe in the back of their minds they will consider what it is they have to lose. Then they might think twice before doing it. I did some seriously stupid driving myself and was damn lucky. But I never pushed it that hard. I always had that thought in my head of what could/would happen if i lost control. The
prospect of losing what mopars I had at the time and never being able to have another was enough for me.

Whether it's drinking and driving, texting, high speed, hit by a train, a lot of young people are just idiots, but I see a lot of adults these days with the same attitude when it comes to speed and texting, the old "it won't happen to me" mentality.
The only..ONLY thing that I see that helps in anyway, is lead by example, especially when your children are at a very young age, otherwise, it's just old people saying blah blah blah because that's all they hear.
So sad.

Yes, I was one of them idiots as well, makes it harder to figure out what to tell our younger generation when we did the same thing.

Bullseye, it's a total lack on the parenting if you ask me. If we want our kids to be smart or good drivers it's our responsibility to teach it and know one else's. I'm proud to say even though I got trashed many times growing up I was always where I was staying before the drinking started and never drove drunk. Like others I lost a friend to it and if that wasn't bad enough I later became freinds with the victim of his stupidity (he was hospitalized for a long time and still isn't right and lost he little boy all because of a drunk). I have no use for people who knowingly put others lives in danger. My prayers go out to the families.

I was driving by 13 and helping my Dad on the farm so by 16 I had 3 years of experience but in todays world of lawsuits, fear of liability and the strict laws that is no longer the case. It is a shame society is wrapped so tight

At 17 you are invincible as someone said. I've heard that's why they make good soldiers.

We have that in this area the cyclists like to ride in the road and block traffic. In this area we have somebody get hit by a car every other week because some idiot was riding in the road and the guy driving his car at sixty miles per hour ( we have high speed limits in NOVA), couldn't stop in time. Then said idiot, cyclist's friends will all complain about how we should have bike lanes and lower speed limits in this area, but all of us car owners are pretty used to this crap and really have learned to watch for the classic idiot cyclist who cant ride on the side walk

Car commercials encourage parents to be irresponsible, like backing up without looking and the car stops itself. Saved by technology. Teaches the kids to be moron drivers. Subaru has a$$holish commercials too. Won't say what I did back in the day, but seemed to have more sense of survival. Or, luck. Still here to talk about it. Oneof the clearest high school memories is the sound of the girls crying at the viewing for three killed in a car crash.

yes, cars are getting more and more equipped with idiot protectors

The only concern about adding more and more idiot protectors . . . is that the world seems to create "better idiots" . . . ( sigh )

I feel for the parents and loved one left behind.

It a tragedy that has effected a lot of people and future of the ones that did survive the accident.

Sending a 17 year old to prison for a moment of poor judgment will not fix the event that past. I am sure what punishment that is handed down is nothing compared to the regret and loss he will be putting himself through the rest of his life.
