My 67 Coronet Woes! 727 Tranny & Driveshaft rebuild cost?!?!

Well, when I bought the car about a month ago, I knew it had a bunch of leaks...but it ran (and make the 3 hour drive home in NY traffic) and the chassis/floors were nice, the interior complete and pretty decent and the body relatively solid.

I truly wasn't expecting the drivetrain to be so messed up.

So I brought the car to the local transmission shop that my family has gone to for years and they are pretty straightforward to have the leaking rear tailshaft seal fixed, possibly a new yoke, and to have a transgo level 1 shift kit installed to get rid of a stutter/shudder the car had.

Anyway, the tranny is leaking from every seal and the driveshaft yokes are both bad, so the driveshaft is being redone with new joints and being resleeved, and the tranny is getting a stock rebuild with a new torque convertor and my shift kit, and the total with labor (out the door) is $1600. Does this sound reasonable?
 
With them taking it out and putting it back in?

Last time I got a 727 rebuilt (bout 2 years ago) it cost me $450, but that was me taking it out of the car and taking it to them
 
Then the price I was quoted doesn't sound too horrible cause its still in the car, there is a few hours of labor (including my shift kit install and replacing the cooling lines, etc) at $105 an hour in NY and the driveshaft work and install, and they have been around for 52 years and are including a 3 year/36000 mile no questions asked warranty.

Seax440Dodge, you got a new torque convertor with the rebuild for $450?
 
That is about right for the going rate these days. Flat Labor Charge right now is $75.00/hour in most places so by having the transmission in the car the removal and re-install will take some hours to do it right. Then the bench time to repair both? You can see where it will add up. Parts are still pretty much not overly expensive so the real cost is time and the Labor charge. I had my '66 Ply Satellite 727 re-built with a new shift kit valve body and heavy duty parts done last year and it was $750.00 out the door. That being said I removed it and then re-installed it myself. I also had accumulated the parts I needed on my own so that helped along with a little horse trading with the tranny shop. But for the 2 items you have, that is more than a fair price...cr8crshr/Tuck

Thanks... I wanted to make sure it wasn't too crazy. Appreciate the info. Now to save money I'm going to have to remove the rear differential center section myself so I can change the pinion seal easily and set the preload accurately. I'll see if I can find advice on this board.
 
I knew that going in, guess I just never had a car this old in this state of disrepair. It's all good. Still enjoying the car, albeit with a lighter wallet than I originally planned :)

There is a section in the Factory Service Manual for setting the pre-load the correct way. If you don't have one get one ASAP or you can download what you need from here:
