I'm tearing down a '69. 383 and am wondering if the used stock rods are worth anything in resale value. Is it worth the effort to press them out or are they scrap bin material?
Yup, but here's the rub. Like redoing stock heads, you can usually go for new aftermarket stuff and be pretty close to where the old stuff will cost by the time it's been reconditioned.....unless you are able to do some of the work yourself. I'm a retired machinist and have a lot of the tools needed to at least do some of the checks myself so it costs me less to play around with the stock stuff. If you can confirm the sizes are good and they are straight, then you just saved yourself some money. Next check is for cracks and that's not that expensive. Also, you can usually swap out the bolts and the size won't be bothered contrary to popular believe that all rods need to be resized once new bolts are installed. I've done many stock rods and didn't have to resize them afterwards but you need to be able to confirm that to be sure.....Keep them. They can be re-conditioned and re-sized along with replacing the rod bolts with ARP's. I have done this on my 383 builds and they are really stout pieces. Unless a total replacement is part of the re-build then re-use them and save the $$$ you will spend on totally new ones for other areas of the build. Just my 2 cents mind you, but never, ever throw any thing away until you are absolutely sure that you do not need them. And as mentioned above, some one out there might just need a full set for a resto...cr8crshr/Tuck
The rods are of value. You can't find a replacement rod for a 383. Except for Eagle rods and those things are to darn heavy.
