Any of you guys own/know about early 70's Datsun 240Z's?

I had the chance to work on a 240z when I going to school for autobody.

Neat cars... and I don't remember it being too tight inside once you acutally get in the car ( I'm 6ft and 220 lbs).

But as others have said.... rust. They seem to be built out of it. The car we had looked decent on the outside but had severe rust in the lower firewall/floor stucture.

What?!? Ok, you gotta tell us more....

Aside from being a lifelong mopar junky, I also play with saabs. Not everything i have can max out at 12 mpg. Have one now that i helped put the motor together for that made 450 at the wheels. It was fast but ate axles. Now the guy wants to make it right wheel drive. So its gutted. Floor out. Fire wall out to make it ls v8 turbo rear drive.

Click link and scroll down. Its the yellow viggen.

On another note. Anyone interested in learning how to tune, saab t5 suite(speed density) and t7 suite ( mass air flow) tuning software is a free download. Read up and learn how. Then find a saab and go to town.

One of the pics in the link gave me another idea. E type jag. Just in case you wanted to try and end it all. Hahahaha

Don't worry about what others will say....do the 'A' body Cuda! Even the coupe would look cool if you can't find a Fastback for cheap. I've even used 4 door cars. Sleeper on the street and underdog on the track.

One of my tenants has a late 80's rx7 with an LS transplant.

He's a fleet mechanic, and has built several cars, so I trust he knows what he's doing.

He showed me one 3" spot on the inner fender that had to be banged in order to make it fit, and said the axle can handle the tq just fine.

Agreed, I like the A Body idea the best but "go figure". I really like the idea of a Hot Rod (23 bucket-32) set up for handling, this is something I've been kicking around myself.

How about a 1976 Corvette, strip it down and put a hot small block. Put all those crazy Greenwood '70's body kits on it. Mid seventies are all over for under $10K.

Thanks for all the ideas guys.

Ah, if we all could just be rich and have the time to build every wacko concoction that pops into the ol' brainhole.

As long as I fit, I think I'm sold on the 240z. The styling is awesome...elements of e-type, dino, 911...nice little package. Seems to be decent aftermarket support. Saw a few vids on youtube of them running down Vettes on a road course like they're standing still. Race-prepped cars can get in under 2100# w/ a cage if I ever wanted to go all out. Some of the LS swapped guys are reporting >30 mpg highway.

Friend sent this to me...Z06s trap 123-124 stock...and HCI LS1s are even kinda mild compared to the gen IV stuff...

I had a 77 280z, which was really the same body as the earlier ones.

Mechanically, it was in great condition. Cornered nice. But any less than optimal road condition and it became very squirrely - hardly any weight over the rear end.

But the body was a rust bucket - in Colorado. I would say that it probably was more rust prone than any muscle car I ever saw.

I had a 71 240Z and loved it. As for room my buddy who is 6' 4" fit just fine. Lots of leg room but the car isn't very wide. They are quite comfortable to drive and keep thinking that if I didn't have so many cars already I'd have one as a commuter. The engine is rock solid with a deep skirt block and a very Mercedes like cylinder head. My car had a non rebuilt 76 L28 with the original 240 SU carbs and it hauled ***. Went 15.23 @ 92 at Fremont Raceway and got the attention of several in the staging lanes (this was back in the 80's). What you don't want to do is use the original R180 rear end (ask me how I know) but the newer R200 is darn near a bolt in. The current Subaru third member is the same thing as I'm told so that might be even a better upgrade. As mentioned, rust is an issue, especially in the tail light area. One note about the handling. Those cars are somewhat *** happy stock and if the rear tire pressure is low you will try to leave the road *** end first (ask me how I know) but with the right suspension setup I think they can be as good as anything.

Busy converting this idea into reality:

Plus this:

or may be this:

With a bit of suspension work

And may a little bit of a wide body kit.
