Back yard garage

Sup guys, thinking of building a 20x20 garage at the backyard. No Sheetrock, just walls and a roof. EXTRIOR walls will be cement sheets. Roof probably will be shingles or aluminum, not sure yet. Foundation will be cement as well.

How much am I looking at? Work will be done by me and my father, foundation re-bars will not be bought neither the plywood for the roof. Maybe not even the studs for the walls. I'm an residential electrician and all that material I can get from left overs after are houses are built. (Already have permission from builders)

I was thinking of doing same, had garage builder do it, working a lot so time was an issue. Since I'm a licensed electrician did electric my self. 25 x 25 . If I was too do it again would of put a pit for working under the vehicle

$.0, just your time. If you can get left over materials. I saw a garage built this way. The walls were solid, 2x4 pieces nailed together on top of each other. It took about two years to build.

Yup, time always is an issue when you need it the most. Yea Ill be doing all the electrical work as well. It's pretty cool when you can do it your way. I'd still have to buy the cement for the foundation as well the cement sheets for the exterior walls.

Draw up a plan. You'll need it for the permit. You can get a quote for materials free from the local HD. I recommend using at least 9' studs. Good luck.

20x20 will be a bit tight unless you put one car in there corner to corner. Go at least 25x25. Figure in a work bench, tool box, compressor, maybe a welding machine and that 20x20 becomes real tight real fast. Our Belvederes are what, about 18 feet long? If you put it in straight, there's hardly any room at the front and back to do anything. Are you talking about building on the slab that is at your house already?

Crap you're right, are they really 18 feet? I'll measure it this weekend. yea I had that in mind, tha damn place will get full in a blink of an eye lol man that's crazy. No I wish it was on there, but it's not. This will be on the other corner of my yard. Built from scratch.

You'd be surprised to see what most cities want you to get a permit for! There's been plenty of things I've done without getting one but most of them are for things they can't see like changing out an old water heater. Yep, they even want one for that! From fences to electrical to carports. They want that permit money AND a way to add property tax on every single 'improvement' that's done on the property.

I'm about to build a 24x28 garage and I'm basically just wanting walls and a roof. You can buy a steel building for about 5000 and depending on state you can usually find a seller that does free delivery and install

Do I really need a permit to build something at the backyard?

I tore my front porch off my house a couple of years ago, and the city inspector stop by my house slapped me wit a fine and the permit fee. It took me twice as long and cost me three times as much as I had planed, once he was done with me.

That's weird, my father built a front porch at the house and added 2 bathrooms of cement, did the plumbing himself. Built a metal fence around front, and wooden at the back. Poured a slab at the back of the house. Raised the house off the ground and re-did the entire floor with new frame on bricks and tile. It's been years since then, city hasn't said a word to us.

Just call the city building department and ask. Do it anonymously so they don't start dogging you if they do want one.
