Exactly what the title says? Who thinks what carb is best for a new 440 build. 10.1 compression. Edelbrock top end kit total power package. Can't make up my mind on what to go with. Building a street strip car. More street than strip. Need something easy to tune and novice friendly. Thinking vacuum secondaries and electric choke. But what brand? Thanks in advance.

I had an Edelbrock, didn't like it so I upgraded to a holley 750 DP on mine. Love it, didn't really have to tune it out of the box, but I tuned my buddies and it was easy. Idles and cruises nice, awesome power when you get on it. Everyone has their own opinion, Holley is mine. :headbang:

HOLLEY
This forum has convinced me.
Minimum of a 750...
Let the Experts chime in but I've been told by majority of Forum members: Holley is almost fool proff

Holley is good, would use a 750 DP IF manual transmission. Different if auto, however I also put the electric chock conversion on mine for cold start type use and daily driver.

Found a demon with electric choke 750 cfm. really clean looks. Love the look of it more than any other and has features most don't. But I don't know much about the Demon carbs. I know holley is good cause that's what I had but not sure until I find some more reviews and stuff on it. It's a 727 AT. So don't care about DP. But for that setup summit is running a 750 and I'm hearing 750cfm minimum. So with that said should I just look for one in the 8's? Thanks

850 quick fuel vacuum secondaries. an 800 edelbrock will work but will need a rejet. 750's too small for a 440, nice 383 carb though.

Works very well. 50 hp over the 770 holley avenger on the dyno. The avenger is my worst holley experiance, The old double pumpers and regular series were much better, but we were impressed with the quick fuel out of the box. The price is acceptable also.

Same carb my engine builder put on my motor when he built it. Mine is a 400 stroked but same carb

Holley

Have a similar build in a 65 Coronet and used a 850 double pumper. I had to drop the power valves to 3.5's as I fight a manifold vacuum of 5.5! It is better to be oversized than under. If you get to know carbs, then you can do power valving, jets, seat/needles, etc... to bring the CFM size down. I called Holley and got mine direct and they were able to include the right electronic choke kit (as big double pumpers only have manual), linkage adapters and the power valve. I would have missed stuff if I had not called them.

I have used the Edelbrock 850 and if you change things with it it works pretty well. Thing is it will not hit at the strip like the double pumper when the secondaries hit.

One key thing I have learned is on a running motor is to make sure it runs well (plugs, wires, etc...) first. Then swap the carb, change nothing else so you know only carb issues exist. If it is a new build, change only one thing at a time. Timing and vacuum issues are usually the first thing. I start low on the power valves to be sure problems are not related to that area then it is easy to get the carb dialed in correctly.

Have fun!

I have a 850 demon DP on my 440 easy tune and works great

I have a holley 850 dp on my 440. Still tuning it. It came on the car.If you start understanding how the carb circuits work you can tune them pretty easy. I have a summit 650 cfm w/electric choke on my 50 chevy p/u small block 350/turbo 350 (stock from a 74 p/u ) It worked great right out of the box. I'm not real sure how rebuildable they are though. I would go w/ an 850cfm whichever carb you consider. I'd rather run rich than lean.

Holley for me too!

Quick Fuel is built better, but i would easily use a Holley 950 and be just as happy. I would stay away from Edelbrock or Demon.

Now that were on the subject of carb size versus engine CI this has been my findings in the last week just temporary installed a wideband on my car I never tested my fuel air ratio and didn't know where I was at so I figured I try it. My set up is of course a 440 with Keith black 10.5 to 1 pistons, ported 915 heads, 484 purple cam, Edelbrock performer rpm intake an out of the box 750 Holley with vacuum secondary's and K&N filter and headers and I found that I was running from 12.7 to 13.5 air fuel ratio from idle all the way to WOT. Did change the stock power valve to a 3.5 because my vacuum is running between 7 and 8 lbs but didn't like how it performed so I went to a 5.0. I thought that I would be on the lean side I was surprised to see that I was on the fat side all the way through. Still playing with it to get the air fuel to about a 14.7 Or as close as I can get it. (just food for thought!)

850 Mighty Demon on the 440. Works good for me. Been on there 8 years. Lots of miles.

QFT 850 if you have 500 hp+ or the QFT 780 street vac sec.

Myself I like just the basic Holley carbs. They been around many years and working fine. I use this basic 850 DP that I only had to do minor tuning on and its been running great on my engines since 2006. Ron
