I've got a 68 Road Runner 4 speed without power steering. I'm 6'4" and I'm only 16 so I may end of taller than that, the issue is that I struggle with the shifter in my car because I have to almost wrap my leg around it in 1st gear. It has the stock bench seat in it and the non power steering massive steering wheel with is very nice for low speed driving. My question is, what can I do to get more leg room so I am more comfortable while driving. I wouldn't be opposed to original style bucket seats but I don't know if that would help at all. Any advice on what you would do in my situation. By the way rear legroom means nothing to me if there is a way to move the seat back. Thanks.
 
I'm the same height with virtually the same car but I have a smaller version TUFF steering wheel that means I have no issue with leg room or the shifter.
 
I'm only a half inch shorter than you....no problems here in a similar car with bucket seats. I also had a bench seat '70 Roadrunner many years ago when I was just as tall, but found the bench had a good lean on the upright, so it made the shifting easier. The only problem I have now is my crash helmet is against the roof when racing - easily solved that my quitting going racing :headbang:
 
Just a thought, do some junk yard recon and measure some older C body bench seat slides / adjuster base's for length of travel.

keep your B body slides just remove them from the seat base If you locate a set of C body ones that are longer mount them on your seat base , make sure to use the B body mount hole locations and if needed relocate the mount studs on the C body adjusters.

I have considered a smaller wheel but without ps the large wheel is very helpful at low speeds and id like to keep it.

Thanks for the advice, looks like ill be scavenging a couple local yards.
 
Had a similar problem with my 63 and a bench seat. I actually moved the seat adjusters rearward 3" and then re-engineered the bolt locations stronger than the originals. No welding required and now I can stretch out. Good luck.

What shifter and handle are you running?

I am 6' 5" and have had to move the seat back in a couple of my cars, if you take your time and look it over you should be able to figure out a way to move yours safely. Good luck
 
Classic Industries sells relocation plates to help you move the seats back 3". $35 if I recall
 
I looked and searched their site but couldn't find the plates. Any chance you can provide a link GearAddict?
 
Sorry to bump such an old thread, never got a notification on this topic and the car has been in storage since December and i had other things take priority. Thanks a ton to GearAddict, i knew i had seen them before but could never find them. Just ordered
 
Buckets in mine, but I move the seat tracks back about an inch. Momo JPS Wheel with no dish. Also turned the Hurst handle sideways. Perfect and plenty of room.
 
I love the design of the seat bolts. It makes it easy to take the nuts off from under the car. The relocation brackets in the post above don't look to me like they'd work on my b body. I think the only direction is to move the tracks. I struggle with leg room in mine and I don't want to change my steering wheel. I love it.
 
Relocated the brackets with 4 new holes 1 1/4 inches forward. Haven't decided whether I want to grind out the old "swaged" bolts, and use carriage bolts in the forward square holes yet. Leaning toward yes right now. It'll give me another 1 1/2 inches.

I meant to take more and forgot. When I remove the seat again, I will. It's really straight forward. 1 1/4 inches is the best you'll do with drilling. The seat frame changes angles in the back and toward the front. It's next to impossible to go farther because of the spring and frame metal underneath. They make it hard to install the nut. Had to use a mirror and angled hand wrench 1/16 turn at a time to finish the job haha. You can see the nut below the spring and how much forward it is compared to the original hole.
