Gawd this has been frustrating. I followed the instructions, and used recommended spray adhesive, but so far I cannot seem to get the bumps and ridges in the molded carpet I purchased from 1A Auto to lay flat. I have new Boom Mat underneath to which I applied adhesive before pressing carpet down. I'm hoping the molding product on the back of the carpet will self-flatten as the car warms up, cos it looks like crap right now. Guess I'm posting here in hopes that someone with prior experience installing one of these, can assure me it will eventually lay flat. This is what a Shar-Pei looks like, in case you're wondering.

I've never glued carpet down, and I've never known it to self-flatten either. Headliner material will, and sometimes seat covers, but I think juted carpet is going to be way too thick for that.

Mine was a bitch too and ended up coming out kind of crooked lol oh well not re doing just yet until it wears out some. but I know what you mean it is hard by yourself to put in carpet and get it all straight and all lined up and even everywhere. one thing I learned is do not trim any extra until you are 100% sure its right, made that mistake in the back and have a 1" gap now in one corner just before the rear seat.

Best to lay it in place and weight carpet at floor pans and let set awhile before trying to make adjustments. If it does not look right just repeat till you are happy with the way it lays.

Pro installers will use steam to get them flat...usually heat from the Sun will help get it flattened out.

Also like headliner or seat covers, lay it out in the Sun on a deck or the driveway so it lays flat and gets hot, before laying it in.

For what it is worth, just had carpet installed in my 57 Buick. Contemplated doing it myself, but decided to have a professional do it. I removed the old carpet because I wanted to confirm the floors were solid, plus I wanted to insure the pans were clean.

Had it done at Addison Auto Interiors in Addison, IL. $314 for the carpeting, and $350 to install. Came out like factory. These guys have been doing interior work since 1976.

Deltic, I know how you feel. I bought trim parts carpet for my 66 charger. It is the worse laying carpet I have ever saw. No matter what I did, nothing worked. Since my car has a console that goes the total length of the interior, it'll be awhile before I buy a new carpet to fix this problem

Had problems with mine to. Out of the box it was creased pretty badly. I used the wife's clothes iron on steam and a towel to get the carpet to relax into shape. It's wasn't a perfect install but now looks pretty good.

Thanks for all the tips people. I'm gonna pull it all out and try using a combination of heat and steam....at this point if I can't imagine I can make it worse. I'll update with a picture once I'm done.

I have done three carpets using the same method and they came out great. I had to purchase a portable steam machine from McCulloch to clean all of my wifes
"nic-nacs" ( easiest way to clean them ). I used the machine to heat and soften the carpet as I laid it into my cars. Doing this let me remold the carpet to get them to fit right.
JMTCW.

I used Auto Custom Carpets for My GTX. I took it out of the Box and left it lay in the sun for an Hour or so and installed it. It fit like a Condom! No need to Glue. http://www.accmats.com/

Guys, as I mentioned I have boom mat under the carpet...it's about half inch thick padding. I have it covering the entire floorpan and trans tunnel...wondering if I should ditch that and just put carpet straight onto the metal pan? There is a limited amount of padding which came already adhered to carpet.
