I am going to look at this transmission, which turns out to be about 2 hours away from me. But before I do , I would like some opinions about its condition and what it is?

I know enough to be dangerous and have done some research online and it seems to be a 1970 or 1972 tranny. based on the Raised pad digits, (10,000 day calendar numbers)

Other than that I don't know if the quality looks good.
Bell Housing for a Big Block?

In the end... this is going to go in my 1973 Roadrunner - 383 engine.

Thanks guys.

Be prepared to replace the shifter linkages. You will need to mount the shifter on the front pad to install it in your RR. Other wise make sure it shifts smoothly and remove the side cover and check condition of gears and rings. If you already have a flywheel 130 bell will be aluminum and 143 bell will be iron.

What does not look right about this big block bell housing?

From what I can tell... the Bell Housing looks like a 318/340 housing. I was on Brewer Performance's website, looking at their online store pictures of refurbished bell housings. And the one on craigslist matches the website 318/340 perfectly. (as far as I can tell)

Are you sure about me needing to mount the shifter on the forward mount section?

If that is so, that is a problem. Look closely at the pictures, the front mount section is broken. Cracked off. It looks like 2 out of 3 bolts are in tact.
There has got to be a way to repair this?

The price was listed at 650$ and for that amount it seems like a steal based on what I have seen around.

http://www.forbbodiesonly.com/moparforum/showthread.php?81038-A-833-B-Body-vs-E-Body&highlight=a833+body

This thread seems to make mention that a Bench Seat B Body car uses the front mounting pad and the rear mounting pad was for E body Bucket seat cars.

If I am using bucket seats in my 73 Roadrunner will it work?

you can replace the tailshaft with one from brewers which is where that mount is cast into.

I have a good A833 id sell that is out of a 68 b body but I dont have a bellhousing for it.

RE front vs rear mount:

Front mount (and appropriate shifter, mount plate and rods) were used on bench seat and bucket seat with buddy seat cars.

Rear mount was used on console cars and bucket seat without console cars.

72 FSM only shows one location and that is front mount location. Rear mount would put shifter base between seats. Tried posting picture but apparently did not work will try again.

Be sure that it is not an overdrive 4 speed , unless that is what you want. They can be identified by the size of the front bearing retainer that locates in the bellhouse hole $650 is pretty high priced if you don't know the condition of the internal parts. ....................MO

That's why the rear mount was used with buckets only.

Pretty sure if you want to run a console, you'll want the rear mount stuff.

That being said, the rear mount stuff seems to be a lot easier to find.

The rear mount is used on all E bodies and all 71 and up B bodies with bucket seats as noted above, these cars are the same structurally underneath. Same shift lever, floor pan, same console, etc. Front mount for a bench seat car. A console car would be bucket seat and use the rear mount. There is a different trans hump, so if going from bench to buckets you'd need to change it.

Thanks- forgot about the different humps (and I just bought one), but buckets and buddy seat did use the front mount, so not all bucket seat cars used the rear.

Awesome info! I thought the 650$ was a fair price. The linkage is original and had a bell housing. (Will end up selling the bell housing)

The way I see it, I can't trust a rebuilt one off craigslist for 1000$. So that leaves Brewers performance, which from what I saw was gonna run me around 4 grand for a rebuilt tranny with the all the parts associated.
So this is me basically building my own.
650$ for the tranny, plus 400$ labor and another 400-500$ in parts I could have my own rebuilt tranny for around $1500.

At $1500 I am more than half way to a complete setup.
all in I figure I will spend around 2500-3000 on this conversion.

I am am glad it will work as is. I had done some research and it seemed like the rear mount would work.

anyone have a shifter I can buy?

4 speed

4spd install 2.jpg4spd install 1.jpgI converted my '68 Charger R/T from an auto to a 4-speed. I have a list of parts I used and will attach it. I know they are different years, but use similar parts, might help you out.

Dude, ChargerRtguy. I already saved those pics!!! Haha, I did some searching in the forums and found a thread where you had posted these. Awesome reference. I Will be using them as my shopping lists, and as a way to research what I will need.
i am a novice at best and need all the help I can't get.

if by any chance you documented your conversion with photos? That would be very helpful.

thanks again.

Have gone from bench to buckets with no shifter location change and works fine on the front mount.

Glad I was able to help. I made that list from researching different books and service manuals. No, I do not have any pics, I have seen some pics somewhere where somebody converted theirs.
