Greetings, here is a stamped pad from my 440. When engine was rebuilt they had to use a different block. Casting is 2536430. P9030197.jpg.

Would appreciate any information. I know internal components can't be verified but at least the block can be.

Is that an e or F? E=69 and F=70

Looks like a '69 440 out of a C body. Look on the passenger's side for the VIN pad and check the numbers. That will tell you what plant the car came from and therefore narrow down the make/model

Thanks - that is an E on the front pad and the partial VIN on the block is ...9D238590.

Its been awhile but I am now more curious. If the castings numbers are the same for a HP block vs non HP Block what's the real difference for the horsepower rating and then what made the 440 a high performance engine (385 HP) for the Superbird or Roadrunner vs those 440 engines (350HP) in the big C-bodies.

The horsepower for the 4 bbl 440 HP was advertised at 375 for several years and the 6 pak was rated at 390 HP. The big difference was the cams, Heads, HP exhuast manifolds and a little different tune.

4-bolt mains is a Chevy thing. Hemis have cross bolted mains. BB Mopars have a full skirt block. Chevy has a short skirt block there for needing 4-bolt mains for the same strength as our full skirt blocks.
There is no difference in a non-HP and an HP block itself other than the HP stamping.

Everyone's quick response is appreciated. I will have to investigate the heads and manifold castings to see if by chance my 440 was re-built with the other components from the original engine.

Reconfirmig some 440 pad codes

I have attached a clearer photo of the engine pad and understand it is a 1969 engine. I am now curious about the other numbers on the pad.

Here is what I can offer - perhaps some others can help further clarify...

1st line is year and engine size
E = Model year 1969
440 = engine displacement
2nd line is build date and build sequence
Month = 8 = August
Day = 11 = 11th day
8 = Build sequence for that day (Or could it be August 1st with the 18th of the day? I doubt it...)
3rd line is Secondary Information, so I am not sure what 17 stands for, or what the 2 further to the right is for...

The 8118 is a non factory stamp so move your decode down one line.

1=January
17= 17th (1969)
2= second shift.

A 238*** Vin at Plant D indicates an vehicle built in mid to late February of 1969 so the engine would have been assembled about 30-40 days before it went into the car. That would be about right.

I was looking at the pad on my 440 recently after having owned it for years and I finally noticed that the build date "12 9" stamped on it is the same day as my birthday. Pretty weird.

Happy belated Birthday.....it was meant to be.

are you seeing a second "1" on the pad. I just see one. By chance did you mean January 7th ? I think the 2 makes sense for 2nd shift since the casting has an arrow pointing to N not D.

This any better ?
