318 Poly valve adjustment

I'm new to this forum but have loved Mopars since High School. I own a 1962 Dart with a 318 and want to adjust the valves since they are getting really noisy. The Shop manual says to adjust them while the engine is warm and running. I'm a little hesitant to try this so does anyone know the specs on valve clearances with the engine cold and not running? I have the engine out of the car to replace all of the seals so I thought this would be a good time to do it. Book says .010 for intake and .018 for the exhaust.

Adjusted my '62 Poly for the first time too after having the heads done. Cold method works great:


“Cold is Cold” - Valve Lash Adjustment – EO / IC

When Exhaust is beginning to Open: Set INTAKE.

When Intake is 1/2-3/4 way to Closing: Set EXHAUST.

Initial new engine cold setting: Add .002 to hot spec. (Cast iron heads and block).

For exact cold setting: Set one cylinder hot to spec.

Let engine cool then measure lash for both I/E to get actual values for setting all valves cold.*

*Dee Dee’s actual measured cold valve lash, after setting hot:

INTAKE: .010 (Intake .010 hot spec).

EXHAUST: .020 (Exhaust .018 hot spec).

the specs you quote are correct for a poly - I remember seeing a sticker from MOPAR years ago that told you what valve to adjust when certain other valves were fully open. The secret of the job is to make sure the cam lobe is facing away from the cam follower/Tappet and for the rocker arm to not have excessive wear in the tip - this way you get the vlave train adjusted as it should be and will run quiet. IF either on of the steps are off you can get false readings and the valve train stays noisey.
