One of the previous owners I guess decided it would be a great idea to cut out part of the dash frame on the drivers side, next to the steering column. I have no idea what possesses people to do that sort of hack job...but anyways, I picked up a complete dash frame out of a 71 Charger from Desert Valley Auto parts yesterday. Just looking for suggestions on how best to install a patch panel to make this dash frame whole again. Trying not to use pop rivets as it would be hard to cover up without lots of filler. Thinking of trying to make a butt joint and using a piece of metal along the backside to strengthen it and use something like JB Weld to fasten it. There is one spot weld on the steering column collar that I will rivet together, It wont show once I assemble everything and install the cluster. Thoughts?

Thanks in advance,

Mark

I'd just replace the whole dash frame instead of patching it up, just drill out the vin plate and get two new rosetta rivets and your done ! It's not hard pulling theses dashes out and it gives you a chance to really take a good look at the wiring harness and you don't have to take out the windshield. Good luck.

Since you picked up a complete dash frame, why not swap that out for the cut up dash you have in the car? No problems trying to patch in a piece, and making it look good. The replacement dash will also be stronger. If the VIN tag is a concern, grind off the rivets from underneath, and epoxy onto the replacement dash. The rosette rivets will still be place and look factory.

DSCN2616.jpg I have been trying to figure out why that piece would have to been cut out . I got my extra frame out of attic to see what could be done. I'm not sure I would cut the braces, I thought about that and bolting the salvaged brace at some point. If the sheet metal is not detached, you might be able to clean up that chop job and epoxy that piece to the back. Or just clean up the jagged edge and be done with it. Since you bought the whole frame and if it is good, then yes I would agree, replace it.
