I put a 383/727 in a 340 roadrunner 1971. The driveshaft is 11 inches too long. Is that because it's a small block shaft? Do I need a big block shaft? It's a HD 727

Yeap, I did the same put a 318 727 shaft in my 400 727 (didn't work). I grabbed a 383 drive shaft a voila it fit, I'm pretty new to the Mopars and have had my growing pains haha.

If the car had a 727 in it before, then the drive shaft should still fit regardless of the engine size. The place where the bell housing bolts to the engine is pretty much in the same place in relationship to the car. And there sure wouldn't be 11" difference because of a different engine and there's only 4" difference between a 904 and the 727.

we ha a problem that our drive shaft was too long. took to Fleet Pride drive shaft sales and had it cut and welded and balanced. the price isn't bad. there are other drive shaft shops it depends on your area. the car is a 70 super bee.

I thought the small block 727 was shorter? I guess my motor and trans was MIA so it could have been a 904 originally.

The 'A' body might have a shorter tail shaft. I know the 4 speed comes like that in them but in all the other cars, a 727 has the same TS. Some trucks and motor homes also come with a short tail shaft 727 but they have a bolt on yoke instead of a slip in. Here's a link to transmission length info.....
