how hard is it to remove dash pad on 73 charger? how do you remove it? where best place to get an affordable easy to install dash pad?mine is original but has 3 big cracks in it..

I have mine fully disassembled at the moment but it is out of the car. It would be a nightmare, if not impossible to remove the pad while still in the car. There are a series of nuts holding the pad to the steel framed dash core. My advice is to remove the whole dash assembly and do it properly. No doubt your steel frame needs repainting as well. Good luck.

I was told that in have to remove the windshield in order to get the whole dash out?

Yes that is true. It really depends how far you want to go with your restoration. I do believe, or though I have not done it this way but you could remove your steering column to get it out. If others know more about this please chime in.

It is a pain in da a$$

but I have done it and also took pictures of exactly where all the fasteners are... (I used a long flexible screwdriver and a lot of bad language while upside down under the dash with a flashlight) See the below thread

The complete dash itself CAN be removed without removing the windshield in the 3rd gen Chargers as the wind shields in these cars don't use the rubber lockstrips and there are NO hidden fasteners under the windshield. It is still a huge pain in the a$$ tho

I got the dash out of my 73 with the window still in it. You will need a screwdriver that is sort of a spring or flexable (hard to explain) the get the upper screws out, but it can be done. The window was out when we reinstalled so I can't comment on that only to say it was MUCH easier with it out.

I used the Kernel's pics to get my 74 dash out.

Very helpful.

I also used a 1/4 drive wobbly extension and u joint on those screws. PITA but it worked.

71-74 dash pad and "affordable" are not normally used in the same sentence.

A hard plastic cap can be had for under $100 if you look, but they are a PITA to install.

Full repro pad is knocking on the door of a grand unless you use that guy that doesn't communicate and takes forever- then it's $450.

I got mine from Carolina Super Dash, was not quite $500. Very pleased.

X2 !!!! Also where I got mine, not sure if Carol is still running the place or not, she was taking a leave of absence a little over a year ago. Definitely worth a shot giving them a call.

I checked "just dashes" twice.

First time $850 plus two way shipping.

Second time IIRC was $1200.

I just got a price from them like a month ago(just dashes)and it was $ 750.00 for my 71 dash.

Dash removal is quite easy.

Screw gun with a long magnetic-tip bit and the top screws come out easily, then you loosen (don't remove!!) the two kick panel bolts...once all the BS under it is unhooked, tilt down and lift it up off the two kickpanel bolts and slide out of the car. You'll need two people to haul it out of the car.
