I rebuilt the 4 speed. When I put it in 1st or 2nd and let the clutch out the transmission is engaged and the car will move. However, it will not when I shift to 3rd, 4th or reverse. Any ideas ?

Shifter linkage not adjusted properly? BE VERY CAREFUL and lift the car completely up off the ground with 4 jack stands. Disconnect the 3/4 and R shifter linkage arms leaving the small rectangular pieces attached to the transmission. Push down on clutch. Put a set of channel lock on the rectangular and force it into gear. Let out the clutch and see if the rear wheels move. Just an idea...good luck

Remove the shifter linkages from the cover plate and remover the cover plate from the side of the transmission stick shift forks into the shift rails put bolts back in cover plate and make sure transmission can be shift into all gears before attaching shifter linkage if not try again. You should be able to feel and hear the gear engagements. If ok put the alignment pin back in shift and aline linkage pull alignment pin and you should be good to go.

Update: I jacked the car up and noticed the reverse shift lever had come out. Have no idea how that happened unless the spring clip broke.
So, I now have 1 and 2nd and reverse but no 3 and 4th. Will not engage at all.

Also, the service manual shows the hurst linkage different than the hurst instructions. So, which one is right ?

More info would be helpful. Does the shifter handle move into 3rd or 4th or won't it move? If it does move, do you feel some resistance, like it is actually moving the shift collar in the trans or does it feel like there's no resistance? Maybe scanning the two pictures showing us what difference in directions you are referring to as well as a picture of the side of your trans with the linkage arms hooked up.

I would follow the service a manual if correct to your car. Be careful and make sure reverse is in neutral as well as all forward gears before making shifter adjustments. Note forward gears and reverse can be engaged at the same time locking the transmission. A deffinate parts break age situation. The reverse lockout in the Hurst body eliminates this possibility but the fork locations and linkages have to be adjusted correctly.

UPDATE: I bought a steel fork for 3rd and 4th. I install the brass one and everything worked perfect. The two looked very similar side by side but there must be a difference somehow. Anyway, 6 hours to pull it take it apart mock it all up, verify all gears are working. put it all back together.
Thank everyone for there input.

Advice from Paul Canglalosi: Sometimes people are using a T10 Fork and don't realize that the throat of the fork is not at the same height and will bind.

I was told the steel forks are stronger than the brass and should upgrade to the steel. Big mistake. Cost me a day labor and some good knowledge.

UPDATE: 4 speed will not shift into 4th gear. All other gears are engaging. This is getting frustrating.

Will 4th engage with the shift linked disconnected? Trying to determine if problem is internal or external.

well, I crawled back under the car and I found that my helper put 3 and 4 bracket on the tranny upside down. Even though we mocked it all up before. Just goes to show you; you never know. The tranny shift great now that the bracket is facing up and the linkage re-adjusted. However, do not buy one of those steel forks; that are NOT the same.

When i had a 4-speed i got a CD Disc on the trans & a book i am over kill and i also asked lots of question & talked to Brewers alot keep pluging away you will fix it i just ain't no expert on 4-speed... :)

Wish i could help.
