I have a 1978 Cordoba with a 400 cid engine and 727 transmission with lockup, the production date of the car is May 31. 1978.
The part number on the transmission is 4028824, which is for a 1978 Chrysler with 400 engine.
The date code on the transmission is a little bit hard to read, it is either 5901 or 5991, if it is 5901, the production date is September 23. 1977, if it is 5991, the production date is December 22. 1977.
Could this be a warranty transmission since there is no vin number on it?
I also see that there is several months between the production date of the transmission, and the production date of the car, is this normal?

Hi,

So this is out of my area of knowledge so maybe others will chime in.

Generally, parts built up to 6 months before the car was manufactured are acceptable and "correct", but practically the dates of component parts are mostly much closer to the production build of the car.

I don't know specifics for a 78 Cordoba, but I have to believe the original trans had a VIN derivative on it. It would be my best guess that this was a warranty replacement transmission due to an early failure.

Again, I do not have expertise with 78 Cordobas, so the above is only a guess on my part. Hopefully other members can chime in...

I know for sure that there is no vin number on the right (passenger) side of the transmission, where it should be.
I doubt it, but is it possible that the vin number could be stamped anywhere else on the transmission?

no, but post the part number from the driver side, and we can see if it is original to the car.

The part number on the drivers side is 4028824, which i have found out is a transmission for a 1978 Chrysler with 400 engine (also see my 1st. post).

Sorry about that,I should have read thru the whole post.

I'd bet that you have a warranty replacement transmission, based on your info.

1978 is when the lockup converter came out and they had alot of failures.Working at a Dodge dealership back then some were warranty and got complete trannies. Good chance yours may be.
