'72 Plymouth Satellite project - Gone with the green!

'72 Project

Started tackling the ralleye gauge setup, had two sets to work with and 4 wiring harnesses. I had a 150mph gauge in one that I wanted to swap to the best wood grain bezel setup which had the 120mph gauge. It also had a factory clock in it, but I had found a rebuilt tach at a swap meet (the color was a little off but looks cool!). Want to do a stock type radio so am looking at something to fit in the dash, with aux in! Was lots of cleaning up of parts, and burnt out light bulbs. I love reading wiring diagrams, and those service manuals have the best diagrams!

Didnt' realize at those 3 speed wiper switches and knobs would come it so handy, since they are not reproduced either!

The heater control switch, spent quite a few hours figuring out the right solution since the switch for my setup, blower switch is on the top, going left and right, isn't reproduced and NOS are $200+ and hard to find.. Rebuilt it with a Napa switch from a 80s Dodge pickup, and swapped the guts over.

How do I test all the gauges??!? Am working on a dash stand to hold everything up for install and that should be interesting..

...Discovered the rear valence is different between '71 and '72 and AMD doesn't carry the dual exhaust cutout panel for a '72.....

72 bumper is a completely different shape than the 71 and since the rear valance conforms to the shape of the rear bumper, you can't interchange and have it look right.

A 71 valance WOULD likely work on a 72 if you used a 71 bumper.

I bought a rear valance from Classic without realizing there was a difference.....when it arrives I'll cut it up and modify my original single exhaust '72 one, I guess.

I did my best to find a car that didn't need quarter replacement since I know how much fun they are to replace!! : )

Getting gauge cluster together, and was able to find a stock fit radio to put in the cluster, that came in today! Was looking for an update but still fit the old offset bezel. Was about to buy an old AM factory radio for 50$ from a guy to get it rebuilt with AM/FM and AUX, but went online to see what options I had!

Found this model USA-230 by Custom Autosound, that has digital tuner, and AUX jack and will bolt right in! It's a 200watt x 4 unit with RCA jacks for amp also, for 160 bucks shipped new! And its half the size! They have the same type with USB port also for about 80 bucks more.. I like the look of the original mopar radio but can't spend a fortune on everything.

Anyone else run these? Take alook!

Jim I was fortunate to find the radio my 73 needed from Rev, a member here that i guess has been hiding lol But anyway what i did was put the radio in the car and i hooked it up so the light in the radio come on is all and i bought another system and hooked up to use that played CD's, works out good so far.. Dash looks right anyway lol.. (small outfit i got in front of console) I think you'll be happy with it, remember, when you get into this car, you are the one that has to be happy so go with what you like! If i could have found what you have, lol, I would have had it! It is going to be sweet....
 
Very cool build I'll be watching beings I'm doing about the same I'm in the process of converting my 72 rallye charger into a 4 speed car so I'm shure I'll need measurements also ,I was kinda thinking set the 4 speed stuff in and kinda guess where the hole will end up tac weld it in and lay the carpet to see if everything works together ,I took the easy route and just bought the conversion kit from Joe in n.j. If you need anything he sells parts and the guy knows what he's doing

I do like the back end of the 73-4 too though, just cant help it, occupational problem ;)

It sure has been a fun project so far, is nice to take a lil break from bodywork and work on electrical and etc., which I actually enjoy more!

Am looking ahead to the dash frame and what to replace the mono single speaker in the dash, I got some 4 1/2" speakers to run side by side, anyone have some pics or ideas, I think I can fab up a bracket and prob do a little cutting to get them where they will fit. THoughts?

Also, anyone know a place that carries this white plastic piece that mounts to the steering column mount to the dash frame? May as well get them ordered so they are where when I am ready to use them! They look like they are pretty brittle and no good ones left..

Ralleye dash I think turned out pretty well! Tach needle is a tad bright, but that could be useful! Will get heater control and radio put in when I get the cluster installed in the dash frame..

Found a use for my little work bench I made in the basement, had to do a little extension mount, but will be nice to work on the front and rear to tie everything up, Got frame epoxy painted semi gloss, I think turned out well! Am really taking over the basement...

Started into the steering column since going from column shift auto to console shift 4speed. Found a floor shift column from a Charger, was missing the key, plug connectors were a disaster and cut up, am going with the tuff wheel so found another column with the wheel adapter... So new new ignition switch and turn signal cam, and a lot of work to clean and repair... and key ignition swap...

Also hope to run cruise control in the future so hope to stuff that in too..
So wiring for turn signal cam, ignition switch, cruise control, courtesy light, and key buzzer to cram in.. Can it be done?

Those plastic column "rectangles" are the same all the way into the 1980's.
Lots of folks don't know that.
I've got a coffee can full from U-pull 5th Avenues and trucks.

You are doing a great job on your restore. Keep it up!
when you get to the point in your restoration of putting the lettering on, can you share the positioning with us? for example how far up from the trim and behind the door does the satellite sebring plus molding get mounted below the rear windows? how high above lock and how far apart is the Plymouth lettering on the trunk deck lid?
 
While you have the cluster apart, I would recommend dressing up all the instrument needles, otherwise, once you get it back together and installed into the car, it may turn into one of those "Why didn't I do that" things that will bug the crap out of you!!!!

Thanks YY1, it didn't even think of those bushing on the trucks etc! Had parted out a 90 ram and sure enough those things were a lot better shape than my 40 yr old ones! Will have to get a stash also!

The jig works really well Will have to post another pic of the progress!

It's funny it's all not too tough but I realize how time-consuming each part is to be ready to install! Seesh!

I have a 72 Roadrunner and the same dash you are working on. That radio looks great for the price. Will it work with a stock wiring harness? Most of the aftermarket radios I've seen that would fit are over $500 bucks! I just want something that will pull in local radio stations reliably and look good.

Just wondering if you have tested your gauges yet? To test Oil, fule and water temp I bought some leads with alligator clips from Radio Shack to hook up a couple of D cell batteries (about 1.5 volts ea.) which should register a little more than half way on the gauge if it's reading right. I haven't got around to testing it yet. Not sure how to test Speedo & Tach though and not sure what to do with amp meter?
