So I'm in the middle of rebuilding a 1970 Carter BBD, And realize the top plate is warped due to the bolts being over tightened.

Anyone have andy ideas or suggestions on how to fix this?:

How fragile is the metal? Should I try and bend it, Or even pound it straight?

Don't think I would pound on it. The way I have fixed this in the past is to mount a belt sander upside down in a vise and GENTLY hold the top and the bowl flat (at separate times) against the belt. Use +-150 grit paper, not too aggressive. It doesn't take long to get it flat. Good luck.

I'm with Colorado, it's pretty brittle stuff & I would expect trying to flatten likely to break.

x2. This same technique has been used many times with Holley 4 barrel carbs when they get warped. Go gentle and controlled and you should get it nice and flat. Of you don't have a wide belt sander, I would suggest a large sheet of sand paper on a workbench and then just rub the top across it.

Good luck!

Luckily the aluminum is soft and sanding goes quickly. If you do it by hand, try to use a sheet of glass so you know it's flat. 12" X 12" sheet of glass is cheap at Lowes or Home Depot.

Wet emory cloth on glass. Take your timeand rotate it ninety degrees every so many strokes. Circles or figure eights are best. This approach will help to keep things squared up so that you don't end up with a pair of wedges.
