Hello fellow mopar friends

I am looking for the best match-up for a trans and Motor, very confusing with all the ideas out there. I love the Idea of using a A518-46Rh trans "no computer needed" what does everyone else think? I am leaning towards the 6.1 or the 6.4 hemi open to all ideas trying to keep it as simple as possible with great results for my 1967 GTX

I am not sure a A518 is up to the output of a 6.1 or 6.4. You would probably need to do quite a bit of internal modification to make that live back there reliably. I am not an auto trans guy but I have never liked the reliability of the A518.

You said a mouthful by asking for "best match-up"; my experience is that there is no such thing. There are just trade-offs of cost, performance, reliability, intended use, etc, etc. The good news is that there are lots of different options! Combing through these threads will give a lot of opinions and even a decent amount of information. I personally went with a 6.1/545rfe in my 66 Net because it is affordable and relatively simple. The downside is that I had to cut up my floor tunnel and at least according to some opinions it may not hold up to the 6.1 (in stock form). I don't drag race or beat on my stuff so I am not so concerned about that and my low mileage pullout was only $400. The other thing I liked was that I can use Mopar parts to make it all work and find them at reasonable prices. Just my $0.02

An A518 is just a 727 with overdrive, so there are tons of parts to "build" it!

did you leave it fuel injected?

I want to go fuel injected....just not sure which motor to go with, and If I use a no computer trans where do I get a wiring harness that will talk with the motor only? I am more and more confused every day as to which year motors are the best? what size...5.7 6.1? Looking for someone to steer me in the right direction.

Google A518 transmission, 5.7 & 6.1 hemi engine and then read until your head aches, take a break and then read some more. Good luck, Al :headbang: :headbang:

Be prepared to sort threw it all slowly though because on the web people will disagree and argue about everything. :argue:

I got my "engine only" harness and computer from Hotwire Auto - it's pretty common, as the same setup that would work with the engine and a manual transmission.

"Simple" is of course relative, as is "Best." I went with the newest (lowest mileage) motor I could find, and ended up with a 6.4 taken from an SRT Jeep. Lots of folks run the 5.7's, they're pretty common. The 6.1 is also ubiquitous, so... Buy what you like, frankly, and what your budget and timing can allow. For me, I went with the 727 and a gear vendors overdrive, as it was the only thing I was certain would fit without cutting the tunnel in my '66 Charger. Also, I already had the GV overdrive, so... It was also cheaper.

At some point in the next year or so, I'll probably buy a "core" (broken) 4l60e, and pony up for the adapter bellhousing, and just spend a day pulling the current trans and test fitting the 4L60e. I've heard an awful lot of chatter that it fits with very little cutting of the car, and I'd love a transmission with more modern shifting control (adjustable shift points and firmness.)

I think the most "simple" approach is either a 5.7 or 6.1, and a 727 trans. These motors have a lot of gumption, so with, say, a 3.55 or even a closer to 3.00 rear gear, you'll have a very peppy car with at least decent highway mileage and capability. If highway cruising is a real need for you (I built my car for the Hot Rod Power Tour), then add the gear vendors overdrive. Very "simple," but not cheap.

i got the 6.1 with the tremec 6 speed. i bought a harness thru modern muscle and it was the HOTWIRE harness. that harness was worth every penny. mounted the computer an fuse box, punched a hole in fire wall, bam 20 min. later all plugged in. not even hitting 2 grand on the interstate at 72 mph. you are going to love it.

This may be true but in stock form the A518 has a history of being a piece of crap for most owners. They tend to fail around 100k or less if used like a truck. As a stock option for what he is doing...its not one.

If I had to do it all again I would probably look at an aftermarket fuel injection controller like a megasquirt. Yes these are a bunch more work but would offer you some additional tuning flexibility without having to buy another tuner or pay somebody. This will allow you do add modifications later if you want like cam changes, turbo, supercharger, etc etc.

If you just want a quick fun car and easy to hook up then go 5.7 with a hotwire harness and stock computer. As USA stated, they hook up in a matter of minutes and you only need to wire in 5 or 6 wires. Really Really easy.

On the power front, I can say the 5.7 has plenty for a stock B body if you want to cruise or the occasional pass.

Feel free to give me a call I can explain of the options with no sales pressure.

Agree! Call Dave and let him run it down to you. Here is a guy who does this every day for all kinds of builds. He will have answers based on multiple experiences not just "what someone thinks" or read about somewhere. Not saying onesie twosie experiences aren't valuable info but it is a limited perspective. Dave can give you more options to consider that actually work.

Spoken from a guy who's been there too!
