Removing Super Bee heater box

Got a '69 Super Bee, and want to remove the heater box and refurbish it and hopefully get better heat/defrost. Based on what the FSM says, I'm assuming I can remove the heater box without having to remove the dash? Just loosen the 3 bulk head nuts and presto, the heater box should come out....should..... After I snake it past all the underdash wires.

3 bulkhead nuts and the hoses...lots of inside screws, and don't forget the cable attachments for the controls.
 
I know it sounds really easy, but is it really as easy as loosening the three bulk head nuts and the box should drop down? Or will there be some wrestling to get it separated from the bulk head? Does the glove box need to come out?

This is for a '70, should be about the same.
 
No glove box is fine, 3 nuts and 2 hoses, 1 nut frontal tab support, 2 clips for cables (hopefully not held by screws) and vent hoses. Should wiggle out with some antifreeze spill !
 
On mine, I found it easier to leave the cables attached to the box and instead removed the control panel from the dash, taking it all out at the same time. I wanted to clean and lube the levers on the panel anyway.
 
Got the heater box out, and what a mess it is!! Nice lil mouse house in there. Lots of work to get it looking "new" again. Got a new heater core from Year One and compared it to what's in there and its a perfect match, including heater hose outlet lengths.

don't know the fascination with mice building nests in heater boxes but it is almost 100% that there will be one there.
 
And so my heater box is coming back out. Struggled with getting the heater hoses on the new heater core, and thought they were on well enough. But slowly over the past week of driving the Bee I noticed the corbin clamp slowly turning and when I went to try and loosen it and readjust it the hose started coming off and of course it finally popped off spraying hot coolant every where (luckily was prepared and avoided it). Tried putting the hose back on with failure and eventually broke off the YO heater core tube the hose goes on. F**k me!!!

So tomorrow morning the heater box comes back out and the old heater core goes back in for at least I know the hoses fit on that core and the tubes stick out of the firewall enough to get the hoses securely on.

I'm considering installing the hoses on the heater core/box while its still out of the car this way I know the hoses are on enough and then fish the hoses through the bulkhead holes and reinstall the box.

Unless anybody has any tips on getting new heater hoses on the heater core tubes............

I greased the heater tubes, tried silicone spray, tried heating the hoses up to soften them and still a BIG PIA trying to get them on.
 
Do the hoses fit properly on the old heater tubes? If so, take everything to a rad shop and have them swap the old tubes onto the new core.
 
Yes, if I remember, the heater hoses weren't as difficult to get on the old core. But the only problem in my area is that radiator shops are nonexistent. Luckily the old core is still in good shape and solid.
 
depending on how the tube broke off you should be able to resolder it back on and probably better than the guy from the factory. using 5/8" heater hose?
 
Yes, using 5/8 heater hose. So I went back and cleaned up the old core and reinstalled that. So far so good and I hope that I haven't broken this one too. Drove the car yesterday after the install, and noticed a little bit of coolant coming out the passenger side fresh air vent on the heater box. Just hoping that's residual coolant left over from the YO heater box break, and not a new break in the original core.

depending on how the tube broke off you should be able to resolder it back on and probably better than the guy from the factory. using 5/8" heater hose?
