Hello,
I am restoring my 1970 RR and it has a block from a 1969 Dodge Monaco. Rest of the engine looks to have all the correct 1970 casting dates for the heads, 4B intake, exhaust manifolds ect. Wondering if having the period correct 383 block adds any real value? Also would the block for my RR have a HP stamped on the ID area or was this just for the 440?

Thanks for the help.

my 2 cents...mentioning a "period correct" block just flags the non matching numbers situation and adds nothing to the value...to me "period correct" is no big deal to me.....but that's one old guys opinion

I had a 74 block in my 70 RR, and when it went south had a summer 69 casting block I had stashed rebuilt instead. Better a correct date code block with the wrong VIN than both the date and VIN be wrong. How much correct date code/wrong VIN helps as in how much more the car is worth, who knows.

True it is one of two being correct, versus neither. After that it is all up to the Buyer.

It will only matter to you, keep telling yourself that at least you have a period correct block. that way when you have to tell someone that it's not numbers matching but period correct motor at least you won't feel so bad lol

It doesn't matter to me my car came with a period correct 383hp, I'm happy. only the purist will call you out on it. I thought Galen Govier was supposed to call you out on your car if you sent the specs to him knowing it wasn't all there, I figured instead of getting a certificate that said you had a genuine mopar he would send you one that said your car is a hacked up clone of a mopar and put sad faces all over it lol but I see more and more all he did was just document by decoding and send you what you already knew.

In my opinion if you motor ever had a rebuild it is no longer original and can't be claimed as factory original(numbers matching yes). so a year correct block is perfectly acceptable in the market place. it's when you put a chevy motor in it is when we call the cops on you!

LOL good stuff! Thanks for all the feedback.

If I were looking at a car to buy and saw that it was not numbers matching AND had way different date coded engine, I would think that's just something else I would have to replace on the car. I would rather buy it as a roller as the engine would have no value to me.

on 67 and earlier, a correctly dated block can not be disputed as the original

sure it can ,it can not be proven that it is. there is not one number that identifies it as belonging to a specific vehicle. there is a window of time that the engine could have came from another vehicle.
