I call them spring steel U nuts or clip on floating nuts. Not sure if that's the official name but it'll usually get you what you want if you ask for them.

there are 3 company's I know of that maybe a help to you 1 is DISCO fasteners they have a web site. and the other is Herbs fasteners in Rochester NY. also try restoration specialties and even a local NAPA store
 
They are called J-nuts, and a re carried by most of you local parts stores.
 
Many hardware stores carry them too!
 
Could try your local Fastenal for the spring nuts also.
 
My local True Value hardware store has them.
 
The paint supply house down the road from me used to carry stuff like that. Not sure if they still do or not....
 
Do yourself a huge favor and go to McMaster Karrs website, harder to find everything online but a quick look threw their caralog and you'll be amazed at the selection and prices. I bought all of my hardware including those j nuts, very good source.
