Hi Everyone,

My '69 Sport Satellite is going into the shop next weekend to have "everything PST" installed...I'm upgrading the 318/904 to a 440/727 so in addition to the new suspension and steering gear, I'm also having the factory (appearing) power front disc brakes installed. Manual drums won't cut it with a 440 in there.

With the new brakes, I will need to upgrade to 15" rims and I'm going to go with the Magnum 500s and a tire size of 235/60/15. Both BFG and Cooper give a recommended rim width of 6.5 - 8.5 inches for those size tires.

I'm wondering what rim width my fellow FBBO members are running with tires that size? This seems to be the most common size I see at Mopar Car Shows, but I'm hoping for some insight on rim width.

Thanks as always for the help.

Chris

7 inch with those....I'd get 8 inch on the rear and get a bigger than 235 in the wheel well...plenty of room

Seconded. These cars look pretty awesome (and you get a little rake out of it, too) that way.
Here's a shot of mine with 7's in the front and 8's in the rear. 225/70 in front and 275/60 tires out back fill the wheelwells nicely.

Ive got 7's in the front and 8's in the back. Dont have the car on hand for sizes but I love the way they look and how they give it a bit of rake.Car.jpg

I have a 68 GTX. I'm running 15x6 E60 Goodyears on the front. On the rear I have 15x8 L60 Goodyears. It's a classic look - but I have to admit there's a problem fitting the rears in the wheel wells. I should probably have gotten 7". One thing you have to consider when you buy the tires and wheels is how much the side walls will bulge in addition over the wheels. Then calculate that against the wheel well space. When you want to fill your wheel wells with big tires - and by the way your disc brakes in the rear will take a little of that space from what the drums used - changing it even more. I love my look but am going to have to put in air shocks to give me some lift for the car over the tires because of the size.

I hope this makes sense to you because I've been dealing with this issue and fractions of an inch to achieve the look I want. Hind sight can be expensive in terms of what you want and what fits. You're wise to do research with members.
if this doesn't make sense say so and I'll try to clarify. Good luck

Howdy, fellow '68 GTX owner!
Test fitting if possible, or at the least seeing/talking to other folks running the wheels/tires you're considering is crucial, as you say.
Nah, the 8" wide wheels on the rear aren't the problem on these - they fit just fine, given the proper offset. I wouldn't run anything in a tire wider than my 275's, as they're just about maxed out in the wheelwells and give about an inch of clearance from the wheel lip. For a stock suspension car, they're about it unless you do what you say with air shocks, a look I loved when a teenager but loathe now.
L60's are just about the same width as my 275's, aren't they? Sounds like an offset issue if so.

I like the look of filling the stock wheelwell. A 235 gets pretty lost back there in these huge wheelwells.

I agree with all the others, a 235 is to small on the rear of these cars. 275/60's on an 8" rim does work well. If you think that is too much, a 255/60/15 would be the smallest I would go.

15 X 7's Magnums is what I have. Going with possibly 2 options for my '66 Plymouth Satellite...

1. BFG's 245/60 - 15 on all 4 corners

2. BFG's 245/60 - 15 on the Front, BFG's 255/50 - 16 on the Rear

255s might be happier with a 15 x 8? I called Cooper Tire to confirm that the size(s) I was looking at would be a good fit on 15 x 8's -- they were helpful and I actually got a customer service rep right off the bat -- will be going with the Cooper Cobras, at least for the first set of tires.

I'm a fan of the same size all around, but I'm likely in the minority on that!
