I know- not another oil question but this time I'm in a bit of a tight spot. Biggest car show in Sweden is within 2 weeks and I noticed today that I'm low on oil (and I heard a lifter go tic-tic-tic for the first time which was why I checked the oil...)

I know pretty much nothing about the engine at the moment, since the plan was to drive it this summer and then replace it / rebuild it during the winter. Unfortunately the seller in the US has the build papers in storage on the other side of the country. But he recalls using Royal Purple 10w30 in it.

I have pretty high oil pressure - both at start but also when the temperature rises. Lets say full throttle 80 psi and maybe 65-70 psi idling. Checked - it's a high flow oil pump mounted to the block. Don't know about lifters, but valve train looks new - it's some kind of bronze colored anodized aluminum. going higher with the oil to 10w40 would make me gain pressure right? But on the other hand - the market is bigger for 10w40 oils with more synthetics to chose from.

What oil should I get which can be at my garage within reasonable time? Remember this is half communist Sweden we're talking about here so none of the fancy snake oils you use are available here. We get the normal Castrol Edge, Mobil-1 and so on of course. Then I found http://lucasoil.com/products/hot-rod-high-performance/hot-rod-classic-car-10w-30-motor-oil but it's mineral. Can I switch between them?

I know that this question has been discussed back and forward but the consensus seems that it depends on engine, driving conditions and so on. So here's the facts

440 with .30 over
Never drive in the winter
Street use only right now - no drag strips available locally

Should I go with the mineral lucas? It's the zink i'm worried about with the other brands. Help me FBBO!

Very subjective. I use the Amsoil Signature Synthetic 10-40 that has hi-zinc content in it. Royal Purple, Mobil 1, and Lucas are good too. The big block seems to like 10-40.

No shell rotella here - they stopped selling it after they cut down on the zink on the swedish market.
Nobody sells Amsoil either.

No synthetic lucas 10w40 or 10w30
Mobil-1 has no 10w30. 10w40 is available as Super 2000 X1 Diesel - is that any good?

You should become a Royal Purple/Lucas/Amsoil distributor in Sweden.
I predict a bright future in this.

anything with high zinc......I use Bradd Penn

What type of lifters do you have? If it's a flat tappet cam, then terzmo is correct - you gotta get oil with at least 1000ppm zinc plus ZDDP and phospates and such. Mandatory if you want a flat tappet cam to live very long.

X3 on the zinc. If you cannot find oil an oil with zinc in it or a zinc additive don't use it. You will be rebuilding the motor before you want to. I am speaking from experience on this.

No ZDDP additives over there? I use an additive from Lucas that treats one oil change. I'd check into that Super 2000 and see what's in it.

So how low on oil are you? Cause any oil is better than no oil.
Mobil 1 has never let me down. 5-40 diesel truck oil is about 1250 ppm zinc level.
Any of the stuff labeled high mileage is 1100 ppm. 5-30, 10-30 what have you.

If you have a sticky lifter, pour a quart of ATF in it, let it run for a bit. The high detergent trans fluid will help unstick the lifter. Change the oil with one of the aforementioned types.

Can you get Amsoil or other online shipped to you?

There's a guy that sells valvoline VR1 but the only synthetic they have is 5w50 part synthetic is 10W50.... Lucas oil don't have any synthetic here at all :/

Would the mineral lucas work?

I can get you oil..PM me..I'm living in Finland mate..all of us use good high zinc oil..

I found it! Lucas oil 10W30 synthetic with a whopping 3300 ppm of zink! And locally available from the distributor if you buy 3x5qt - now I just need to tend to the high oil pressure. Any ideas?

Btw, tekhouse -thanks - let's talk when it's time for the next change.

So would I but the guy who imports it to sweden seems to have been drinking it because it's impossible to work with him...

Careful with too much zinc also. Yes, there's such a thing as too much.
The Valvoline VR-1 is on the "good" list for having enough zinc and phosphorus, too.
I use an oil called "Driven" - it's the formerly named "Hot Rod" oil made for the Joe Gibbs
Racing teams. Perfect blend of additives (still need detergents in addition to the ZDDP/zinc/phosphorus).

From my research (you do a lot of research after you see a brand new cam wipe out lobes :) ),
the oil has to have not only enough zinc but also enough phosphorus since they work chemically together.

In our country (US), the EPA Nazis made the oil manufacturers take zinc and such out of conventional oil
because it reportedly damages emissions equipment like catalytic convertors.
Reportedly. So they say.
As a result, cam failures are pretty much rampant across the hot rod world because folks simply throw some
really good synthetic oil in their old cars (like I did) thinking it was the best, only to see engine damage occur.
