Not sure what is the correct way to do this, but in order to remove the rear diff cover, do I need to remove the axel shafts? I'm only trying to change out the fluid, and do I even need to remove the cover to do this. I was thinking of replacing the gasket as well. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, to remove the center section you'll need to pull the axles. Just 5 bolts behind the axle flange and they'll slide out, the brakes are probably the biggest pain of the whole thing to me. Not to big of a project just make sure you have your manual to set up the axles bearing play when you reinstall the axles.

I have a hand pump that I use and snake the hose through the fill plug down into the bottom of the diff, and pump the fluid out. I just did this last week, and it worked out well, but it takes a while, and I thought about the drain plug idea, maybe some day I will add that option.
