Yeah, I was wondering that myself. My guess is they tried to hoist it while it was still flooded and since most of the plane is made of wood the weight of the water tore it into pieces.
Back in the early 80's I was fortunate to have seen several of these beautiful aircraft up close. I am heartbroken when I see things like this happening to vintage anything, cars, truck and aircraft like these being lost. It's too bad that they did not have an aircraft reovery team to hoist this properly. It could have been saved, if so.
