727 removal questions

Hey guys,

I am finally got enough strength to start on my 727 swap to a 4 Speed Transmission. I have never removed/installed a transmission but tried to read as much as I could before starting. I have apparently missed a step and was hoping to ask what to do next.

So far I have removed the drive shaft. Removed the transmission lines and shift linkages. Unbolted the starter and leaned it back to rest against the headers. Removed the bottom and top transmission bolts. I put a jack under it for support removed one of my exhaust/header bolts so I could unbolt the transmission mount and removed from the car.

I tried to ease the transmission back and it started to move back but gets to a point and will not move back anymore.

Do I need to unbolt the flex plate before removing the transmission? If so how do i spin the plate around to get to each bolt?
 
Did you remove the transmission mount? That might be whats holding you from sliding it further back
 
You cetainly have to remove that 4 bolts that hook the flex plate to the converter. Put a big socket wrench on the bolt that holds the harmonic dampner on and just turn the engine and take out one bolt at a time. You will, of course, have to remove the dust cover to see the flex plate,,,and of course remove the trans mount cross member bolts and all the bellhousing bolts that hook the trans to the block and remove the starter, etc. etc.

Thanks guys, I will remove the flex plate tomorrow and see how it goes.
 
If this is a BB or RB bock you suppose he knows the 4 spd input shaft is going to be to long and the crankshaft is not set up for the pilot bushing. We are here for ya young99, we all got to learn some how!

Well its a 383 High Performance Block I believe. I did not even think about the input shafts being different sizes. Looking online most people either drill it out, shorten their input shaft, or use a smaller pilot bushing. I don't know the history of the crankshaft in this engine, I will find out more when I get the transmission slid off. How do you go about drilling it out if it does not fit properly?
 
Remove the crankshaft and take it to a reliable machine shop. Take the pilot bushing with you that you are going to use and they will fit it for you. Or just buy the sealed bearing that fits in the crankshaft where the tourque converter noise sat. Not knowing if anything has been done to the transmission input shaft bolt the belhousing to the block and see if it transmission fits. If everything is still in stock form and you do indeed have an original automatic crankshaft it will need to be bored an other 5/8" in depth to be deep enough for an original lenght transmission input shaft.

Well I was able to get the transmission out after getting the flex plate unbolted and a little prying. I tapped in the pilot bearing and attached the flywheel. I tried to use the bolts from the flex plate but they are a tad too short. I am going to have to pick up some longer bolts. This is what it looks like so far.

I wish I would have read this before putting in the pilot bearing. The pilot bearing I was sent was an adapter bearing so maybe it is a little different than the regular one?
