Hello again,

I'm exploring the possibility of purchasing a 1968 GTX; I'm currently working on determining the authenticity of the car. Can current/previous owners of this vehicle confirm the location of the
fuel filler? Is it at the rear of the vehicle behind the license plate? 67 Model has it drivers side rear.

Also, is it odd for GTX models not to have a tach as std equipment (whether a tic/tac or not) given
is status as a factory performance vehicle?

Sorry for the many questions; thanks to all for any information that can be supplied.

Ian

fuel filler behind rear plate.......... tach is an option, my GTX came with a clock in that space. i believe some came with neither

I'd do a lot of looking at pictures of 68-70 b-bodies. There are tons of sites/pages of factory standard and optional features for these cars. Spend some time reading the factory stuff, then look at the specific codes for the car you're looking at. LOTS of stuff to know.

I have a 68 GTX and the filler neck is behind the license plate on all of them (68s). The dash tach was an option you could purchase. Mine has one but you will see them w/o as well.

ask as many questions as you like - you want to be sure of what you're buying. Make sure we get to see pics of that bad boy if you purchase.

GTX is VIN exclusive
If VINs match, it is a GTX

-Alos, GTXs should all have a 150 mph speedometer (at least 67s do)

My recent pick-up, a 67 GTX, fuel is "Drivers side, rear quater, Nascar "flip-top"

The subtle things you should look for in a 1968 GTX are the 150 MPH speedometer, The .990/inch diameter front sway bar, and the 11" front drum brakes. Check the fender tag against the Title.

all GTX vin's start with RS23.

oh and another thing, other than convertibles, all 68 GTX's are hardtops...no "b" pillar.

mine came with discs......... not at all uncommon

Correct. Clock or tach were both optional. Mine has neither.

Yep, 150mph speedo was standard equipment on the GTX. 11x2.5 front/11x3 rear drums were standard, front discs optional, power on either optional.

Hello. May sound stupid, but all 68 GTX's came with a 440 or hemi. Make sure yours has this. Check the front pad of the engine block next to the distributor for stampings. Good luck!

All GTX's had dual exhaust. The right side muffler hanger is welded to the floor pan but the left side is bolted.

Thank you all for the great tidbits- some I was aware of from sleuthing thru the net and others not at all
i.e. hangers on the exhaust welded on one side but not the other

BEING a newbie Mopar guy I don't have a lot to offer. I chased Roadrunners and GTX for several years and located only junk.... my patience paid off big dividends with my 68 Sport. anyway all the above is correct and as a long time classic car owner of many brands here are my favorite recommendations. Stay away or calm down and reduce what your willing to offer if you hear the seller say:

* I was told
* it ran when it was parked
* "I heard"
* "all it needs is "Freon" lol each time I've been told that I always respond okay I'll throw in an extra 100 if you'll just run it down to your favorite shop and get that taken care of before I take delivery" ( knowing well that a service charge runs about 39.00) 100% of the time the seller refuses to sell to me or they back away from this comment QUICK because they know that I know it needs 1500 dollars of work and parts LOL!
* "its rebuilt but I lost the receipts or the PO lost them" (ask yourself who in their right mind loses 3-4000 in receipts????
It just needs" seems innocent enough but check it out thoroughly
* "I don't have it right now but i'll get it for you" means you better see all the parts BEFORE you hand over cash

those are just for starters :headbang:

I would get an experienced member in your area or someone else that really knows these cars to go with you if you have any questions. Usually, even an extra set of eyes will see things you missed.

Any car you are chasing will always looks fantastic....until the money has changed hands. Something about rose-tinted lenses
