Am I OCD to keep the old master cyl cap?

I am finally getting around to due a long overdue brake job on my 64 Fury. Got her in the garage, and ordered new Raybestos parts from Rockauto. I like to keep things looking factory original or period correct. The new master cylinder looks good, but has a flat top cap. All the old Mopars I remember have a domed cap, and the pics in my factory service manual show that style. I am thinking I will de rust the original cap, and put it on the new cylinder. Have to use the old longer retainer bolt too. I will use a vinegar bath to kill the rust, and then cold galvanizing paint for a ne finish. Am I overdoing this? Opinions?

Love the car. But, I wouldn't compromise safety for originality. I would put a dual master cylinder on that car. I was just a kid with my first 64, when the master cylinder failed. Ran in the back of an olds. Lady tried to sue me.
 
If that is the only criteria for OCD, then I need to be locked away and studied for years at a University somewhere in Switzerland or something like that!

X4 A dual master cylinder is an easy and cheap conversion.

I too like originality, but a nice dual MC would look just as good.

the thread title is misleading..I thought you were cleaning the shop..chunking the master and keeping the cap as a souvenir..to that end I would have voted yes..
 
The only way I would keep the single MC is if it is a concours correct resto. otherwise I would convert to a dual MC.
 
Dad, first beautiful car. I commend you for NOT jacking the back and doing all the things folks do to that style Fury to race it. I am a stickler for originality as well with few exceptions. I sometimes get the look of "why bother" but I say because that is the way I want it.
So good for you keeping it original.
The one thing I would kind of agree with however is the dual master. I have a 67 and one side went shortly after I bought it. Believe me it can happen. Had I not had the rear at least I would have been in trouble. Having said that, if you still want the original MC, good for you, do it!
Now as far as keeping the old cap, the ONLY thing I have found to work on rust is Naval Jelly. available at Lowes or Home Depot.
As soon as you brush this thick goo on, you can see it bubbling. Wear gloves.

It is expensive IMHO. $7.00 for 32 oz. That is 128 oz for a gallon and it gets pricey and since it is a liquid not a paste like the Naval Jelly, you have to use a lot.
Fine for nuts and bolts but if you have to soak the cover for example, you'd need the entire 32 oz I would think, you cant brush it on.
Good luck either way and again, that car looks great.
 
Trash that single bail MC and go with a modern aluminum one!

They are only $26 at Autozone right now...
 
Another vote for a dual master. I converted my 66 Belvedere years ago because I used to drive it all the time and will again if I ever put it back together...

I'm a purist all the way, lol... but I would say save the old master cylinder in a box for future rebuild/use when you go to concourse restore the car. (aren't we all?) but the dual MC is far safer for everyday driving and stopping (a very important part, lol) :)
 
I drove my 65 plymouth for years with a single master but I made sure my ebrake was always up to par and good thing I lost the brakes coming off of hwy 4 one day at morello. Lucky for me there was no one around and the ebrake worked correctly.

Scared the crap out of me but I just replaced the brake hose. I was 17 I replaced things as they failed........
