I have a 66 Plymouth belvedere which has a 8 3/4 posi in it. I had it setup but I have a leak coming from the yoke end . what would cause that? I've changed the seal but it seems to still leak a little. Would too much gear oil make it do that. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you

did you damage the seal when installing? did you clean all parts before assembly and lube contact parts? btw, it's called a "sure grip" differential

Posi,Sure grip one in the same.Who cares what he calls it they both do the same thing.

The yoke could be worn, have a groove on it. There are a couple of choices here, micro sleeve and you can get that at Napa, or change the yoke for a new one.

He will eventually? Especially if he puts posi lube in that 8-3/4 instead of suregrip lube and it starts chattering. Plus he might as well learn the right terms now as to be looked at dumbfoundly later. And by the way would your car be powered by a motor then or the proper term engine. Not hardly the same are they.

I don't think I damaged the seal. What is a micro sleeve? Kind new at this . I had this prob before. I bad a new ring a pinion put in it . it leaked before that and I changed the seal and it stopped.

As 5.7 hemi stated if the old yoke has a groove worn in it installing a micro sleeve over the old yoke creates a new surface for the seal to ride on and hopefully stops the leak.

66bel,
Mopar 3B is correct. Sometimes over time due to the friction of the old seal will wear a groove in the rotating part. The repair is to install the sleeve to build up the rotating part to allow an original seal to work. NAPA is a great source or any bearing and transmission supply house (industrial equipment) such as Motion Industries or Bearings Inc. The sleeve is purchased on dimensions: OD of the worn shaft x length of sealing area. The device is called "speedy-sleeve" and it comes with an installation tool and instructions. I use a Loctite sealing (I use the bearing mount compound) over a thoroughly cleaned shaft. Speedy sleeves work great....take your time when installing....... Remember to use a Loctite sealing product on the OD of the seal when installing it.....remember to clean the housing bore.....AND lubricate the seal lip when installing it.

This is just a shot in the dark but I had the same issue. Changed the seal for a double lip type, removed and cleaned the axle vent and actually ran a hose from the vent up high to the under body. Well it turned out that oil was leaking down the splines of the yoke even though it fit perfect. I ended up putting silicon under the washer of the pinion nut and no more leak. It seems to me that regardless of the vent, pressure builds in the axle and has to come out somewhere. Either that or the oil gets slung and due to it's viscosity temporarily plugs the vent or spews out somewhere. I think that the vent holes are too small and the next time I'm under there I'll put one on the other side. My vent also secures the brake line junction so there can't be much of an opening.
