I saw a car I'm interested in. It is located in Illinois and on E bay with a price and a buy it now price. I sent the owner a message that if they agreed id send them my cell # and we could discuss it over the phone. I never bought a car without seeing it and handing over the cash and i don't think i ever could. i was thinking of using one of those services were they inspect the car and report back to you,that i think may be worth it. Just how does this whole Ebay thing work. Im registered on pay pal and have used E bay but only for nickel and dime stuff. I just can't see myself buying a car without crawling underneath it. Can anyone offer any sound advise. Thanks

Hello Steve. I have purchased 20 or more cars and trucks on Ebay and Craigslist all over the country. Fortunately, I have only been mislead twice resulting in re-selling and losing a few grand. I am addicted to the thrill of the hunt and purchase. I am an impulse buyer. I have never used an inspection service. In my twisted mind, the car is exactly what I have been looking for, it's a great deal and if I don't hurry up and close the deal, I will miss it. I envy people who are methodical and have patience and know another one will come along if this one doesn't work out. I have made some outstanding scores by using this reckless behavior. I always talk to the sellers on the phone, ask for more pictures and Google their name. If they are crooks, someone has posted something about them. Good luck and I hope you get a great car.

I wouldn't trust it without seeing it or having someone reliable looking at it for me. And while he was there giving me a description and sending me pictures right away.

I bought a 69 camaro rs from atlas muscle at out of Texas in 2011 and when it arrived it was so bad off I was horrified. I vowed to never make that mistake again. I took a 7,000 dollar bath on it.

Mind me asking Steve? but what is the car you are interested in?

My car looks good in (some) pictures. You should see it in person. I don't have the guts to buy sight unseen. At least have a FBBO member take a look for you.

This is a tough call, especially with vintage cars, just go to a few shows and see how good a car can look from 4 paces but as you close in on it turns into a mess.

Bad body work ca be hidden in pictures by accident, and the sell may not know the difference, right now a lot of the "sales boom" cars are going back on the block, a lot of cars i seen sell for way too much years ago and the new owners are done with them, now back up ffor sale and they don't even know that is a bondo bus...

I would utilize this forum, there are a lot of knowledgeable and decent guys on here that may be local to the car you are looking at, put the area up here and see who pm's you.

When I look at a car I bring the flir cam and the snake cam, I watch the motor under the thermal imager to make sure it doesnt have any "hot spots", very very very good way to find cracks, and a lot of stuff the present owner may not even be aware of! Its so accurate and sensitive that if I put my hand on my counter top for a 3 count, lift it off, and then count to 5 the came can see may hand print for another minute or so!!!

With the flexi cam I can look inside frame rails, under air grabbers, inside quarter panels and cowls through the trunk area and engine bay, etc.

I went to look at a 69 super bee for a buddy of mine, supposedly a perfect resto, NO body filler, NO parts missed, you know the type. Well I get there and the motor tests perfect, it was super strong, heat picture looked uniform and it started up from cold really nice, just an all there, nice drive train in the car. BUT the problem is, this was from a little shop that took it in trade a flip and did the resto themselves, when someone builds to sell, they take short cuts to save where ever they can, vs a guy building it for himself or a co building it for a specific customer, charging by the hour and making 10-15% on every part will NOT miss much..

So First I look above the gas tank, NO mat, then I scope under the carpet, grey primer not fully jambed, under the dash and the pedals have just been spray painted (all black, never rebuilt or taken apart), the dash harness has butt connectors all over it and I seen a welded in patch in the dash frame (probably a cb radio), under the seats (and I am sure behind the back rest) was all RUSTY, they painted the edges nothing else, so the seats were just covered, not taken apart and restored. No trunk divider, package tray was installed with no brackets (found this because it was loose), there were a few other things too...

So I had a check signed from for this car to buy it for up to $61K if it was worth it, they were asking 67K. I made my list and the guy was standing there watching me look over the car, he was cool about it because he deals with collectors on occasion (his words), he looked at my list as I was ding it and kept kind of laughing, so when we were done I said "whats so funny", he replied "you found stuff I didn't even know about" (I took this as he knew about a lot of it and just ignored it), BUT he did nothing wrong, I know its grey area but the car was nice, no doubt about it, the drive line was super super nice, big block 4 speed dana, it was done really well (they send that out)...

So I made my list and started the math, $150 to add the trunk bad, $100 for the divider, $1200 to jamb the floors and roof correctly (have to pull the windshield to do it right, plus the entire interior), $900 to rewire the dash (may as well pull it since you will have the shield out), it added up fast.

So i showed him what I was thinking, I told him the car is worth $61000 in perfect shape with all this stuff fixed, he said more like 62500 which he was right but I was trying to buy the car lol. I showed him the prices I came up with and told him if you fix it all I will write you a check for 61000 if you fix it all or deduct it from the 61K and I will write the check...

He went in the office and brought one of his body men with him, they came out about 5 minutes later and said $62K minus you repairs and we have a deal... I told him to throw in the paint to jamb it(they had a mixing station and mixed the original batch) and throw in the gas tank pad and trunk divider, and swap out the bumper jack for one in another car (He had a pristine bumper jack in his personal car, about the nicest I ever seen, the one in the bee was nice too, but that one was seriously perfect, lol) and we have a deal...

He smiled and nodded, we went in the office and wrote it up. Then we ended up blowing out a trialer tire on the way home after we ran over someone detached tire cap and I found out the jack I had on my trailer wouldnt pick up the trailer and a car (since changed it, luckily this one ran, I pick up a lot of cars that dont, we first tried using the jack from my tundra but that thing is useless unless picking up a tundra)..

BUT anyway, get someone local to check it out, even if they just run their hands down the quarters and look under neat with a flash light for a minute, it can save you thousands, and on the same not if anyone ever needs a car in CT, RI, MA area checked out, pm me, I can see where I may be able to help out. We should start a thread specifically for that, you list your location and area you can cover and if someone is interested in a car in that area you can go peak at it for them....

If I buy a car up there, you will look at it for me...some of the stuff recently at Barret-Jackson in Reno. OMG.

I'm in IL Steve, and I like cars. At the very least, I could see if it exists. Is it near the bottom left of the state? I'm not really willing to go to Chicago ;D

Steve- Definitely get it inspected. I bought my second 70 Satty ragtop from a guy in Iowa. I had an inspection service check out the car, cost $300. he drove it, put it on the lift and took over a hundred pictures that he sent me. After that I knew exactly what I was buying. I was actually surprised when I got the car because I thought it was in better shape than the inspector made it sound. Better to be surprised on the upside than the downside tho. I also used a 3rd party escrow service. Basically, I sent them the money. They informed the seller they have my money. He shipped the car. I tell them I received the car and all is good. They released the money to the seller. Everyone was protected. I think it cost 1-2% of the selling price. I also used Horseless Carriage in NJ to ship the car enclosed. They were excellent.

Steve, what I can tell you for sure is that there are TONS of cars for sale out there, so unless you are looking at a rare car of some kind I would be really careful about buying a car sight unseen. I totally understand the excitement of seeing pictures of a car and thinking "that's exactly what I'm looking for". Of course the ideal situation would be to fly out and inspect the car yourself. If you can't do that, next best would be to get an unbiased opinion from one of our good forum members. Lastly, you could try to hire a local appraiser to take a look if one is available. To me the risk that you take buying sight unseen depends a lot on your personal financial situation and how much loss you can absorb if the deal is bad. Only you can decide that. Good luck whatever you decide.

Steve as you can see ..... all these comments are HIGH DOLLAR buyers and a few low dollar buyers with ONE thing in common. have it checked out. I am a member in Texas of http://www.jewelorjalopy.com/ and we charge 200 on average. We can do any level of inspection for you. ( get what you pay for) not quality of inspection but intensity of inspection. I usually have fun doing it so I try to offer a better thorough deal just because I love old classics. the tough part for us is making sure we document the "numbers matching" part eg crawling around to get the serials etc. I wont speak for the other inspectors but you get to interview THEM first as well. So here's what I love to look for....its the unseen factors IMO:

the seller says:
* I was told
* we heard
* I believe
* it ran when it was parked
* the a/c only needs service * my favorite because if all it needs is service ... for 5000 or more YOU pay for the "just needs service" because it ALWAYS means.... its' messed up and gonna cost you 1500!!! 100% of the cars I've heard that statement, I offered them an extra 100.00 to go ahead and have their mechanic SERVICE it and I'll pick it up when finished and 100% the times I've done that the seller tucked his tail and ran or we dropped the price 2000.00 because a normal service with one can of Freon averages 49.95!!!!! Let me repeat 100% times i offered the 100.00 its NEVER failed. someone selling a 4000.00 or 5000 car can AFFORD 49.95!
* it's rebuilt.... (okays let's take a look at those receipts) almost 10 out of 10... they were "LOST" aka meaning it wasnt rebuilt or a very old rebuild or the rebuild was less quality than advertised!

it's like Obama...he said "you like your doctor you can keep your doctor".... everybody is all up in fury that he lied. NO HE DID NOT lie. (think this through for a moment) you CAN keep your doctor....*as long as you are willing to pay for it YOURSELF. Millions of people MISS the small element of a well crafted statement. he just left that part OUT!

point is.... if you hear those comments .... INVESTIGATE further and determine what you willing to accept for the hard earned dollars you are about to hand over.

IMVHFO Either;
Look at it yourself or pay for or find someone willing to look at it & assess/grade it,
that you trust to inspect it for you...

NO IF's & or BUT's, do anything else your a damn fool, or merely just lucky...

I have no issue looking at cars and taking some pics for members, I am on the ct, ri, ma line, my front door is literally 5 minutes from ma and ri lines. I am also in ma and ri 5 times a week, anyone needs someone to go and take a look, I have no problems with that, my wifes car gets 50mpg and we are always up for a ride..

DSCF8015.jpgI rented a U-Haul trailer three years ago and drug it from Chicago to Boston to pick-up a 4-4-2 for a friend I worked with. 18Hrs one way. P.O.S! (translate) PIECE OF ****!
Drove back home. . . Empty! $500.00 in Diesel, $127.00 in tolls, Hotel, Food, Etc. DO NOT EVER BUY A CAR SIGHT UNSEEN! Air Fare is too cheap. I live 40 miles west of
Chicago, and I'd be glad to look at the car for you if it's anywhere around me within a reasonable distance. Good luck!

Thank you for the offers to look at this car. Actually i would never want to impose like that on anyone. I would never be able to sleep nights buying a car sight unseen. What ive done and plan on doing is contacting a E bay seller and asking them if there car does not sell to give me a call. If they respond positively i'll forward my cell number. I would use a car inspection service for sure. If practical id try and see the car in person
What i don't get is how others buy off E bay sight unseen,i guess i don't have the nerve to do that LOL.. I really appreciate the advise given

hey Steve-o, Paul (zyzzyx) and I live like ten minutes from each other and I would be willing to go with him to check out the car as well. four eyes are better than two! lol

and it's no imposition! were are all brothers here on FBBO and we look out for each other!
