Have a recently purchased 70 Roadrunner (383 with Power steering). had to replace the power steering pump and steering box and get the front end aligned. Really cleared up a lot of the steering problems but a new one has popped up.
When turning right everything seems fine but when turning left it seems that it has too much assist when turning left (not sure how to explain it) Have to be very careful and have to adjust the steering wheel while going through a left turn turning the wheel a little either left or right until completed the turn. Car also seems to track just fine when going straight.
Just wondering if anyone has had this happen and what was done to correct it.

thanks

did the alignment shop print out your specs? sounds like your caster is not the same one one side...

I think I fixed the problem. Did some searching on how to adjust the valve body on the power steering box....so I "dove" into it....loosened up the bolts on the valve head to much at first and lost a lot of fluid, moved it to much the first 3-4 times where the wheels turned all the way to the right, then to the left but after almost a whole qt of fluid, and learning to not move the valve body to much...like 1/32" to make a change I think I got it so it steers pretty good left and right....took it out for test drive and it is even turning left and right.

Yep, I was going to mention the valve body adjustment but you got it!!! Had this problem once on my roadrunner, and making that adjustment solved the issue.

Well I took it out yesterday to a cruise night which required a bit of driving on the freeway and the one thing that has changed is the car does not track as well as it did when just driving straight. Seems like I am constantly adjusting the steering wheel now either left or right to stay straight in the lane. Did not do that before I made the adjustments to the valve body always seems to track straight. Guess maybe I should go and have the alignment checked. Not sure what else could cause that problem. Did not see anything loose while I had it up on the lift. I have not had the alignment checked since I replaced the steering box and added front disc brakes.....maybe that should be my next step...........

Classic symptom of not enough caster. Forget about what the manual says, you need as much POS caster possible. You may need the offsets, or better yet, New tubular with caster built in. Tell the alignment guy to get as much caster possible, while keeping camber slight neg.

Did you get this resolved? Just wondering because I'm thinking of adjusting the camber on one wheel but don't want to mess up the caster/steering.

A few years ago I tore my front end apart to freshen it up some and install a disc conversion. I took the advise of some of the members here and did a really careful job on the alignment, just so I could safely drive it to the alignment shop. Well it drove so well I ended up not bothering with the alignment shop. 3 years later and it still tracks and drives great!

Moral I the story is try it yourself, if you're careful you can get it right yourself. I used no special tools at all, although next time I think I'll make some alignment plates.
