“Bullitt,” and one of the most famous car chase scenes ever filmed, turns 45

October 68', but the thought is what counts.
October 22 1970, I got off the bus from USAF basic training from Lackland, and arrived Sheppard AFB. A Friday, right in front of the Airman's club, and the Movie theater across the street. I looked up, and Bullitt was playing. So, after a few well earned beers, and listening to "Black Majic Woman" on the Juke box, I went and watched Bullitt. As many here are veterans, we always remember that first day out of that, and Bullitt is part of mine. I drive a 68' Charger to this day.

Man, your post brought back some memories. I went to Sheppard for tech school in '66 and I'll never forget how good that first Lone Star beer tasted when I got the chance to duck out to the Airman's Club. Some things you never forget.

Moparsmitty it's an Honor to speak with another old Air Force Guy. 3752 tech squadron I believe. A week later I was in Helicopter school. AFSC 43130, a whole 18 years old.

Going to do a bullet shoot on Saturday with my 69 black charger,
I know it was a 68, but the producer said no one would remember, so I'm changing my rallies wheel to steel for hubcaps & removing the R.T. Badges.
The T.V. Show on the east coast is blue bloods,
I'll give update when it will air,

That sounds like fun! a Black Charger is a rare piece. I had my 68' in the movie "Indian Runner" with Shawn Penn, filmed in Omaha in 1992. But the fools cut out most of the cars! When I came back from overseas in 74', my First Charger was a 318 with a three on the tree. I sure wish I had kept that car! In 1975 My *** of a brother was assigned to little Rock AFB, and drove it there. it was stolen.

Even more .....

Stunt Driver/actor Bill Hickman and Steve McQueen or stunt driver Carey Lofton in the ten minute long chase scene in “Bullitt”.

That pic of the Charger with all 4 wheels off the ground is TOUGH, as we used to say!

I found this recently and thought it was pretty cool, so I bought it. I like the little figures inside - especially the guy holding the shotgun.

Those are cool diecasts for the Bullitt movie

An old friend of mine had a Bullitt replica until just recently. We served together as apprentice Electricians a long time ago in a far away galaxy.....

Pics borrowed from the R/T Garage (I recommended 'Bob' contact them with these pics after installing a Rev-N-nator unit)

I remember the movie well. there was an article in the old saturday evening post about that movie. the charger was bought off the showroom floor, bone stock. steve mcqeen built the mustang or oversaw all of it, he drove the scenes, or most of them. seems like 'all" to my recollection. he was a car nut from day one and quite a racer. no one, (including steve), could believe that the charger would out run his hand built mustang. it`s very apparent in the straight aways that the charger would catch him easily !-----true story, read it setting in the dentist office-back then. no brag-just fact!

I DVR'd it a while back & just watched it last night...
Still one of the all time great "real car chase scenes",
even all the lame sound effects,
replaying scenes from different angles
& 7 hubcaps lost on the Charger &
seemingly a 16 speed gear box & double clutching in the Mustang...LOL
IMO even with all the computer graphic stuff they use today,
I still like that chase scene better...
