Rev limiter help

I just bought a 1967 Coronet 500 4 speed manual and a built 440. I want to put a rev limiter on the car in case I miss a gear or have a driveline failure. I have attached a few pictures. I would like the limiter to be as inconspicuous as possible. Any suggestions? Also, any suggestions on what upper RPM to set the limiter? I have been looking on the net and it seems 5500 - 6000 pops up a lot. I was thinking about 5000 to keep it safe. Am I being too chicken?

I would think unless you are racing, you shouldn't be over revving your 440. There were a couple tachs that had built in limiters, which essentially just just down your coil, which I don't ever think is a good idea, since you never stop dumping fuel.

I like MSD soft touch limiters, it cuts ignition in patterns as to not load any 1 cylinder. The issue with this is it wont be a hidden install, there distributors out there that don't have separate boxes but will need to scrap your existing dist....

I would just go all the way msd pro billet with a digital 6al, you will pick up a noticeable amount of power and economy plus get the limiter you want. Figure around $500 and you are done. I would also do a coil and nice wires, you will most likely have to readjust your carb since you will now be burning all that fuel.

We did a 340 cuda a couple weeks ago, got rid of the stock ignition, added a pro billet, 6al, wires, coil, new plugs, and went up on the jets. It made a real difference, better throttle response, not as much fuel smell in the exhaust (not sure what cam that motor had but it seems to dump fuel in the exhaust pretty good, we are going to change the cam in the winter, he says its WAY too lumpy anyway)...



ANYWAY hope this helps, pertronics drl will work with about any system, points, hei, old msd and mallory, (non cd) etc etc and doesnt use pills, it has little rotary dials, and I would imagine can be hidden well... ALso check out msd 8728, I think I have a used one around here somewhere, I can look if you are interested..
 
If you using something that has a pill, they routinely start to pull signal 300-500 rpm before the actual limiter # on the pill.

If you want to shift at 5000, put a 5500 pill in it, shift at 5500 use a 6000. If you put a RPM pill right at the shift point it will lay over badly in most cases.
 
It looks like I have a lot of internet learning to do. The Pertronics DRL is very small at 3" X 2.5" X 1.4" Tomorrow I am going to take another look under the hood and see If I can find a "hiding place" for the limiter. Thanks for the information.

under the washer bottle, behind the battery, or under the dash inside the car...
 
My dist. was a points type so I went with a Pertronix 3 ignitor that has a rev limiter built in. There is no box to hide.
 
I bought the car about two weeks ago and I took it out this weekend to see what 5,000 rpm felt like. When I got to about 4,000 the car began vibrating, seemingly from the motor. I was not the vehicle speed that caused the vibration, it was the rpm's. This is not a stock motor. It has a purple cam, performer intake, Holley 750, etc. Is this a characteristic of the 440 or should I be concerned about the motor? The way that felt I would be very uncomfortable running it up to over 4,000 unless that is normal for a 440.
 
No that is not normal, it sounds like you have a balance issue. Now for the fun.......trying to isolate it.

That sounds like a balance problem, what balancer is on the motor, is it a steel or cast crank (making sure the correct balancer and flywheel are installed can fix vibrations).
These can be huge headaches, drop the crank belts and spin the water pump with an e-motor, see if it goes away, if it does it in neutral and with the belts dropped you most likely have an ill balanced engine.

Someone told me they fixed a badly balanced engine with washers before. But that was a ford..

is this auto or stick? hopefully its a simple flex plate or balancer issue, not a unbalanced or ill balanced rotating assembly, that is expensive to repair...
