I'm new here and I've been reading a lot of restoration projects and I've noticed most use AMD for most of the metal. How does Year One compare to AMD? It looks as though Year One is a little cheaper and usually offeres free delivery. I'm sorry if this has been talked about before, but could be very helpful for us newbies.

Thanks

You can get AMD sheetmetal from many different retailers or direct. I'm not sure what all Year One carries, but if it is Sherman parts and you can get AMD instead definitely go with AMD! Sherman sheetmetal is crap but for many years and models (such as my 66 Coronet) it is all that there is other than finding a rust-free parts car.

Hi!
Great question.

1. Auto metal Direct (AMD) is used by the TOP restoration shops.
2. Year One does NOT make replacement parts. Many times it is a company called "Good Mark"

Now, I my opinion:
AMD was the first company to adopt ISO 2000 Quality Standards AND found out the stricter and tighter quality controls make for a better panel.
I personally have used AMD parts on my current 63 Polara (Max Wedge Clone) build.
Grave Yard Carz resto shop in Washington state OR Oregon strictly uses AMD

Thanks for the input guys. The only things I've really looked for up to this point are the floor pans. The floor plan by picture look the same but seem to be about $100 cheaper.

Something to keep in mind. AMD may not make the sheet metal you need. So you have no choice but to buy/use Goodmark/Sherman/Goldstar. The last 3 are all the same and just put in a different box at the stampers. I had no choice on 1/4s for 70 Coronet since AMD doesnt make them. I would get as much as you can from AMD. A great place to get AMD sheet metal is Jeff @ 521 Restorations.

I've compared the Goodmark vs AMD floor pans. Good mark did not have the seat belt bolt capture nut, same for the Goodmark vs AMD inner fenders. No hood hinge capture nuts. AMD has the black protective coating, Goodmark/Sherman bare steel flash rusting when you get it.

Quality difference is night and day. AMD wins over Goodmark/Sherman if they make the part.

I bought AMD through YearOne, cheaper yes but shipping was a little more. Overall, the AMD part/shipping was less money,

I strongly agree with super-bee-ski. You pay extra for a reason, parts are better. Goodmark doesn't make their own panels either. Call and ask them, they'll tell you they are Sherman. Found this out when trying to find replacement patch panels for my dad's '66 Satellite. Jim

I think AMD is 18 gauge while the others are like 20 0r 22 so AMD is thicker hence more cost. Now if its a driver you could use the thinner trunk pan or quarters and epoxy prime it. I always use AMD so I'm not sure how long it would last.

I bought AMD for my GTX and never regretted using those pieces. Their quality is the best on the market. Do you want to save $100 and get second rate quality - really? Your metal is important to your resto.

Most people will say you will spend X2 or more what you saved on the panel on mucking around trying to get it to fit and look correct. Not to mention taking care of the flash rust on the piece when u get as noted by mrsnicks. I went right to Sherman n of Detroit and they pulled parts out of the warehouse all with rust on them. I was sold on not buying them right there.
