My 1967 Belvedere Convertible Plans and Restoration (aka - Mad Scientist Build)

Sanding, and sanding, and sanding . . . in the engine compartment . . .

With all the RAIN from the 3 storms that decided to converge on North Carolina at the same time, I'm surprised that I'm not boating to work this past week . . . we've had a lot of rain for the past week - but here where I live, not as bad as originally predicted . . . so all is GOOD ! ! !

Well now . . . I "really" wish my welder was working better for the last 2 years as I was welding in the engine compartment . . . then maybe I wouldn't be spending so much time cleaning up all the welds that I made in my engine compartment . . . so I'll continue on my sanding ordeal, and hopefully get the engine compartment in Epoxy Primer some day ? ? ?

Still waiting a call with the details on how they're going to fix the "not quite bolt in" 5.7L Hemi from Magnum Force Racing . . . I had "hoped" to have the engine in the car Labor day weekend . . . But that's when I found out that it didn't quite "bolt-in" . . .

In the meantime . . . I figured it was about time to get the seats in the daily driver "fixed" . . . what do you think ? ? ?

sm_dailydriverseats.jpg

Embarrassed to show that I let the seats go this long before getting them fixed, but I had a "more important" Belvedere that I was working on . . .

AND . . . like just about everything else that I attempt to do, this was suppose to be done in one day, but my truck was "not quite like all the rest" of the trucks, and they had some additional work that needed to be done . . . so I'm driving around with half my truck done, the back bench seat stripped of the leather, and I have to make another trip back to drop it off and get it completed next week . . . the story of my life ! ! !

Nice score on the parts and like Dev said it's good to see metal turn to primer.. definite sign of progress!

Thanks Goon . . . feels good to see it going into primer too . . .

might have some paint going on here shortly too ( if I an get all the sanding done in the engine compartment - someday ? )

My seats would look like that too if I looked like this!!!!

Everything is really coming along nicely Larry, except the motor mounts of coarse. At least you have other things to be working on while you wait for their solution. Have you heard from them recently with any updates?

Working on other things and trying to make progress . . .

Been working on the engine compartment and trying to get it cleaned up, welded up, ground down, and into Epoxy Primer . . . think it might take a while to get all this done . . .

Here's some more progress . . . a change to something I didn't like . . . This is a pocket that can collect dirt and it's hard to clean . . .

sm_enginecomp01.jpg

So I cut off the excess metal that was making the pocket . . .

sm_enginecomp02.jpg

Welded up the two pieces of metal to make it a boxed frame . . .

sm_enginecomp03.jpg

Ground down the excess weld to make it look like it was meant to be there . . .

sm_enginecomp04.jpg

And repeated the process on the driver side of the engine compartment . . .

sm_enginecomp05.jpg

Thinking of doing the same with the rest of the frame all the way to the fire wall . . . just to clean it all up ( make more room for headers too ? )

Thanks for the kind words of support H2E - lots to keep me busy, just working on one thing at a time . . .

no news from them yet on the plans to fix it . . . hope to hear something this week will shoot them an E-mail too . . .

Damn that's going to be clean!!!!!!! Great weld Kahn.

More in primer . . . moving forward . . .

Still working to get things done and move this project forward . . . saw the (3) holes on the driver side mod that I made above, so I got them all fixed, ground smooth, and then spent an hour blowing the dust off things, cleaning areas with lacquer thinner, final sanding . . .

getting it ready for this . . .

sm_enginecomp06.jpg

Boy does it feel good to see that in primer ! ! !

And then to think how much work I have ahead of me of getting the engine compartment ready for paint ! ! !

Grab a stool . . . take a seat . . . LMAO . . .

Now I'm looking at the driver side and wondering if I should have taken the cutting all the way back to the firewall ? ? ?

Hummmmmm . . .

Thanks 747 . . . the "fix" to my welding extension cord really has helped with my welds . . . I think I'm getting the hang of it . . .

( after 2 years of welding . . . duh ! ) I hope so ! ! !

Got the truck back from the shop with all the seats done . . . looking good ! ! !

Like usual ( at least with my luck ) I got the truck back from the second day at the shop, to get the "one-day" reupholstering of the seats in leather

- Yes, you heard me right, my truck was "different" so it took 2 days to do what they usually do in just one day . . . ( sigh )

But the results are well worth it . . .

Before . . .

Help me . . . I can't get out of this engine compartment ! ! !

Not really . . . continuing to progress on the cleanup in the engine compartment while I'm waiting on the solution to my engine not fitting in the Transformer . . .

Looked at the other side and wondered what it would look like cleaning up the rest of this side . . . what do you think ? ? ?

sm_cleanupframe.jpg

The driver side has the steering box, master cylinder . . . but this side is a bit more open . . . so I thought . . . what the heck ? ? ? ?

Wondering . . . should I fill in the hole ? ? ?

Notice the difference . . .

Worth the extra day they did a great job!

Agreed Goon . . . not bad for a truck with 300,000 miles on it . . . nice to not be sitting on ratty old seats and foam padding still . . .

( note to self - don't wait so long next time . . . )

Just didn't look completed . . . so I fixed it

Didn't get any response about closing up the hole on the frame ( or any stating I should not close up the hole ) . . . but it didn't look completed, so I fixed it . . .

Did not quite like the way that this looked . . . the hole made it look like it was "incomplete" . . .

the finished product . . .

Hopefully - the passenger side of the engine bay goes in Epoxy Primer tomorrow . . .

been sanding on it tonight . . .

think it's about ready . . . YAY !

We need to have an FBBO contest on who can use the most spools of welding wire????

Looking great Kahn!

Finally got a chance to test out the Plasma Cutter That I Bought in the Spring . . .

WOW . . . is all that I can say . . .

Here's the Plasma Cutter from Woodward Fab
( I did a little more product review in General Discussion too )

View attachment 280832

The cutter worked very well - and it's very compact too ( thanks to technology )

View attachment 280831

The cuts were done very nice - if I remembered to not move too fast . . .

View attachment 280830

And I was able to get some of the tunnel hump trimmed from this . . .

View attachment 280829

To this . . . in a pretty short amount of time . . .

View attachment 280828

Could have been less time, but I had to keep switching the one 220V outlet to fill the compressor tank, then cut on the metal . . .

I'm very pleased with how this thing worked ! ! !

Kahn,

It's been a little while since I've posted on your thread. (I've been lurking around on it though)

You have been doing some amazing work. I really like how you smoothed the frame rails.

Looks GREAT !!!!!!!!!!!
