I am thinking of picking up another project car. I have come across several that seem to be good fits in my budget and tastes, but it seems each time I inquire, the Fender tag is missing. How much of a risk to the future value or validity of the car comes with buying a car with no fender tag even if the body numbers match?

Well for me if the car did not come with a fender tag or a build sheet i would not buy it. If it had a build sheet and no fender tag i would be good with that. To me build sheet is better then a tag. You can get a tag with a build sheet. See if the car has a build sheet. Most cars with out fender tag or build sheet are not worth as much and harder to sell.

Just my 2 cents

I would agree

Doesn't matter that much to me. I've only owned about a dozen cars where I thought it was needed. The rest were just basic production cars.

Does it have a title? I feel like it could be hot. Wouldn't buy it myself...

The cars I have inquired on all have titles, but they seem to all be missing the Fender tag. I am worried about paying too much for something that if for some unforeseen reason I would have to sell the car, I could at least get some of my investment back.

First find out if any of them have build sheets. 2nd do some research on the model of the cars and see what they are going for on Ebay or other sites like that. I know that you cant compare exactly but you can at least get an idea what they are selling for. Compare the cars with and without that fender tags if possible.

You need to educate yourself on the market, trends, values. Only you can really do that. You know what they say about opinions....and it's your money.

And yet cars with bad tags go for less. Bad/improperly made/guessed at tags raise questions about the car you may not want asked. Sometimes no tag is better than a bad tag.

So here is an example of car that is a good example of what I am looking for - 1969 GTX, which is my favorite mopar B body. The pics look great, he posted here on the forums as well, but has no fender tag.

It's now up on ebay for less money and looks like a great builder, but the fender tag missing is keeping me from pulling the trigger.

Have you figured the cost to finish that car, as compared to buying a roto-resto'd car? The market is pretty freakin' soft.

I'm confused...he has a picture of the fender tag in the ad. As far as not having a fender tag...that depends on you. It could definitely hurt resale value on something like a GTX, on a satellite or belvedere though the buyer is a lot less likely to be concerned with it. It also depends on your plans for the car, if you're going to put it back to original stock, then the fender tag is pretty important, however if you're planning to do your own thing with a resto-mod and it's not numbers matching anyway...well then who cares? Like I said, ultimately it's up to you and what you feel the car is worth.

The fender tag is for a Road Runner; not this car.

I guess I should have looked closer. I wonder if he knows he has the wrong tag on his car? It's pretty obvious when you look at the pic of the vin next to it, even for someone who doesn't know all the codes.

I understand your approach, and I have thought of this, but ultimately, this has to be a longer term thing for me. I don't have that kind of money to buy a restored GTX, at least from the prices I see on ebay and some other sites.

I just checked Ebay. I did finish with no sale or any bids at $10 k. That says something right there.
I looked at it and would not give him close to 10 k. That car will drain your bank account. You can buy one finished alot cheaper.
If you have time keep looking. There are some cleaner projects out there for a decent price.
Market is soft.

Not sure if anyone else sees what i see. Thats my thought on it.

mmissile is going to tell you to save your money and wait for the nicest car that you can afford with the closest to what you want in options shows up... and he's right. These days, in the long run, it is waaaaaay cheaper to buy one already (or mostly) done. I'm sure you already know this. However, some cars/options are rare enough that you're just not gonna find what you want unless you wait years and years... which was the case for me. So, I saved and bought a running car in decent (in my opinion) shape that was close-ish to what I wanted. Like someone said, you gotta do your own research and decide what price range you think is fair.

I want to see what you decide and what you end up getting! Pics!
