:)hello short and too the point, one thing is got a meaning what I'm talking about is a 440 from a 1974 Chrysler the engine I have has J 440-6 on the side and also has the number 3698830 J 440-6 and the pad in front has J 440 on it along with 1 19 E no other numbers anywhere I was told it was a E body engine and also told it was a industrial truck but it came in the new yorker from 1974 so was told late 440 with 6 mold resets wonder if its worth a rebuild it looks good to me also I'm not building a 100 point show car or a drag queen either just wanting it to move under its own power
anyone know thanks cam67

The short answer is...it's a 440! If it looks to be in good shape, rebuild it. Hard to go wrong there. Get a nice mild cam and you should be golden. I had a 75 440, regular old blah engine, cast crank and all. I rebuild it with new rings, bearings, timing chain set, oil pump and added a mild cam. I put that in a 72 Dodge pickup. That thing ran great. Truck ran a 14 flat quarter mile (not a race truck, just having fun after towing a friends car to the track). I averaged about 15 mpg (loaded or unloaded) and it could pull a freight train. Not bad for a low compression (8.5:1) 'smog' engine.
So if it is in good condition, rebuild and enjoy. Don't worry about the numbers and stampings except to satisfy your curiosity.

not a strong webbed 440, but they are still fine blocks, I personally would change the heads to something a bit better, if you are going to rebuild it, you can get 906 castings for $100 a set, or aluminum source heads for $1000 complete, so after the machine work and all the parts, when you compare the price difference, its a no brainer.

So yes, short answer 440 is a 440, rebuild it, BUT dont use the cam that came with with, use the crank, rods, block, water pump, pulleys, dampner, and covers, change the pistons to something with at least 9-1 or 9.5-1 aluminum heads, change the oil pump to a high volume, change the timing gear to a 2x roller, change the heads to either an earlier chamber or source aluminum, and use a decent aluminum intake with a decent carb. You will easily make 450 hp and that block and a cast crank will be fine (not being raced of course)...

To rebuild a smog motor as is would not make sense, a friend of mine had a camper motor and sent it in for a rebuild, they did just that, changed the pistons with the same profile as they removed, same cam, etc... He put it in a demon, and that thing felt like a slant 6, lol, gobs of torque, BUT what a PIG...

good luck..

Saved me some typing.............I agree with what he said.........

What the heck is...nuokokaokbeOkrsokay?????

Sounds like a typical 440 rebuild. Does it have a ridge at the too of the cylinders? Regarding heads, I bet you can find some 906's done on CL or around here for cheap.

I have a 68 hp engine i tour down it had a large hole in the side where the rod broke through everything had been rebuilt at 5000 miles the heads are the type that came on the high comp engines and also it had a voodoo cam in it did some checking and the cam is way to radical it is for street and strip required a stall of 3000 not what i am wanting just a driver a 440 8.5.1 is way better than the 400 that came in the car what would be best use the 68 heads and worry about valve seats and valves burning up or just be simple and run the stock ones others had listed that the heads that came out in the 73 smog setup are the best for the pump gas we are using today dang bet e85 would even burn in the 440 from early seventy 440s i am just wanting good advice like i said just wanting this old car to be mobile would love to stick a brand new fuel injected from a hell cat in it but that would be worlds apart from what i am wanting and would cause a man to be a single man again lol thank you any help is well thanked

I HAVE THE 906 HEADS OFF OF A LOW MILE REBUILD THAT WAS BLOWN UP THEY ARE IN GOOD SHAPE JUST WAS TOLD THAT THE SEATS AND VALVES REQUIRE LEADED FUEL AND I AM OKAY WITH THE 440 NOT BEING A STUMP PULLER I AM JUST WANTING IT TO BE ABLE TO RUN ENOUGH TO DRIVE IT AROUND HOME AND BE ABLE TO HAVE A AWAY TO MOVE IT INSTEAD OF DRAGGING IT BEHIND MY TRUCK I AM SAVING ALL THE PARTS OFF OF THE 68 440 HP IN HOPES OF GETTING A NEW BLOCK LATER ON THEN IT WILL BE IN THE WORKS OF A GREAT BUILD UP IM JUST TOYING FOR NOW MOPARS ARE WAY COOL WONDERED WHY I EVER GOT RID OF THIS ONE FOR SURE NOW WONDERING WHERE IT WILL TAKE ME ANY ADVICE WILL BE APPRECIATED THANKS

WOULD HAVE MADE SINCE TO HAVE CHANGED THE REAR END WITH A LARGER GEAR 355 OR 375 SET IN THAT CASE THE 440 THAT I HAVE SEEN RACED NEVER WAS FAST OFF THE LINE BUT MADE POWER HALF TRACK LIKE I HAVE SAID I LIKE MOPARS AND JUST TRYING TO GET IT MOBILE AGAIN THANK YOU SO MUCH

I HAVE A SET OF THOSE I AM NOT WANTING TO REBUILD IT. IT SHOWING NO SIGN OF WEAR IT IS A HD INDUSTRIAL TRUCK IS WHAT A 40 YEAR DODGE RETIRED MECHANIC SAID AND HE ALSO TOLD ME THAT THEY USED ALOT OF THESE ENGINE IN SOME SEDAN CARS SOME CHALLENGERS AND CUDA CARS WAS ORDERED WITH THEM ALSO IF IT IS A LOWER COMP ENGINE IT SHOULD HAVE STAMPED L OR LA IT IS NOT STAMPED ANYWHERE ON THE BLOCK IM NOT WANTING TO RACE IT THAT HAS ALREADY BEEN DONE HOPPING TO SAVE IT FOR MY 7 YEAR OLD SON IT WAS MINE IN HIGH SCHOOL NOW SURE WOULD LOVE TO SEE HIM DRIVING IT.THERE IS NO WAY I WOULD BUILD IT FOR HIM MAKING 400 TO 500 HORSE POWER AND WATCH HIM BLOW IT AWAY BUT ANY INFO WILL BE APPRICIATED THANKS

I'm glad you can make any sense of it, God knows I sure can't! Between the run-on sentences and lack of punctuation, capitals, etc. I can't make hide nor hair of what it's asking or trying to say? I think it might be foreign, but don't know where?

Thats the best post ever, I read it 4 times.. lol...

I like this part though... Last edited by cam67; 11-04-2015 at 09:59 AM. Reason: SPELLING

The heads that are on it are probably '952' (942) castings or something similar. Those are good heads, like the 906 but with hardened seats. You are NOT going to raise the compression by switching heads (68 and up). If all the parts look to be in good shape, do a simple rebuild (rings, bearings, timing set, oil pump) and get yourself a nice mild cam to build up the low end torque. You'll thank me later.

Still no response to the question: What the heck is...nuokokaokbeOkrsokay?????
