Since completing my Charger I've been doing allot of tinkering with carberation, started with an 870 Avenger which worked great but liking double pumpers I switched to a Street Demon 850 DP and really like it. The problem is the idle circuit, any adjustment that equals a good idle and off idle performance results in a super rich idle. After reading dyno pulls from Hunts motor (much like mine) where he tested both an 850 and a 750 and only gave up 6 hp with the 750 I borrowed a Proform 750 from a friend. The 750 seamed really responsive to adjustments and offered a better idle mixture (I'm assuming because of the improved velocity), it also had a better feel in the pedal (not so stiff) and weighed nothing compared to the Demon which feels like a brick.

I'm looking for a 750 DP that has adjustable air bleeds, is lighter in weight, has a nice feel (not stiff), electric choke and has to be of the Holley design like Quick Fuel, Demon, etc. Any thoughts or suggestions are welcome and by any means if one of you has one to sell let me know. Right now I'm liking the Quick Fuel Black Diamond.

the quick fuel seems to be getting real popular. I have a Holley HP ultra, but i would have got a QF if i had known more about them.

there are a few vendors on Ebay, and a place called FBO that sells quick fuels, with free calibrations included with purchase, you need to know your cam specs and compression a weight of the car, gear ratio, torque converter stall if applicable, and they will set it up for you.

I have the 850 DP QFT - 850 for all out race fun and now run a QFT-780 vac sec. for cruising, both run out of the box well and are easy to adjust basically a Holley

My 850 Demon runs good and idles sweet. It does smell rich at idle, current set up seems like the best yet.

I like my Demon but if I have to stop at a light for long it will get my clothes smelling like fumes with the side exit exhaust!!! Just looking for more adjustability.

That sounds really cool, how close are they on their setting most of the time??? Definitely going to look into this. The Holley HP Ultra was another I was looking at, care to share?

I just received my Quick Fuel 750 from Don At FBO. Won't be until spring when I get to test it out though. He uses your engine specs, car weight, tire size, tranny type, and driving style to sell you the best for your application. He was also quite a bit cheaper than Summit and you get to talk to somebody who actually has driven these cars.

I know I say it a lot but Promax's 850 custom built is $750, you call him and order it he will build it for your application, TO ME, that is worth a lot more than $750, and it is a hell of a carb. And even if you dont want to spend $750 he sells rebuilt Holley 750cfm carbs for $350!!! I have used a couple of each and NEVER had an issue... I had a 406 chevy engine with dart iron eagle heads, mild roller cam, but basically a 10-1 400 sbc bored 30, just a 450hp small block chevy... I tried a used holley I had on the shelf, it ran shitty, so I rebuilt it with what i thought would match the motor better, still not right, so I bought a brand new barry grant, NOPE, still ran like ****, the motor was sitting on a dyno, that someday the shop would want to use for a different engine, lol, so I called PM and asked if he could do something fast for me, $350 for a rebuilt holley, bolted it on and it ran perfect... A bit of tuning after it was in the car, maybe 10 minutes!!! and it was a monster... SO I was sold on them, give them a look you wont be sorry...

That's great, sounds like I have a plan! I didn't want to spend allot back when I built the motor because I was sure I'd do allot of tinkering before I settled on something but am pretty confident in what I want now.

Sounds like we had the same 406??? Almost an exact match with one I had built years ago.. love those 400s!

$750 is a bit steep but I'm sure I'll spend $600.00+ on a Quick Fuel anyways, I'm leaning towards a new carb insteadbof a reman.

Now if I can just figure out who is FBO?????

Nevermind, found their number.

Thanks, after talking to Don he priced me a spec'd Q 750 and had allot of suggestions as well so I'll likely order my "LAST" carb from him!

I have nothing but god things to say about the QFT carbs we have used. If you do have issues they have great technical support.

Devin, if you get the quick fuel you will love the tuneability. Here is a log I use for mine.

They are expensive but worth it.

Thanks, that is why I want one.... tunability! I've done all I can with mine and feel it needs some air bleed tuning which it doesn't offer so instead of farting around I'll buy exactly what I need and be done with it.

A lot of problems can be fixed with the jettable metering blocks. for the emulsion and idle circut

Also check out a place called Drag Race Car parts, you can usually offer them 5-7% less on their make a offer app for more savings & free shipping.

Anybody running a Pertronix distributor?? He had some suggestions in the ignition department as well and suggested trying the Pertronix III. I'm going to recurve my distributor and set it up exactly as suggested just to see how it works, only thing I have to figure out is how to limit vacuum advance to 10 degrees?? I've got some ideas but it will require it being removed a few times errh.

I have the Pertronix III and Flame Thrower coil. My Coronet still had a points distributor when I bought it. I like it - easy to install, eliminates the ballast resistor, rev limiter. Only ran it for a month before the "accident" and subsequent restoration. Two things to consider: because the brains are inside the unit it's a larger diameter - had to grind down the corner of the passenger side head to get it to fit. And Petronix doesn't have a tach output so it's incompatible with FAST EFI and possibly other EFI makes too. Only matters if you're considering EFI in the future.

I will never run EFI.... if I can't put a screwdriver or wrench on it it doesn't belong haha! I think the EFI is obviously the way to go (provided it works correctly ) but for me these cars are an escape from the modern computer age and a toy to play with. Thanks for the input and he did say the distributor wouldn't fit with aluminum heads but the lack of tach output is disappointing. I'll make sure to look into it before jumping in.

I bought distributors and ignition control from him as well. Just got the one put on my Charger. We are having an issues with my tic-toc-tac not reading correctly anymore. He thinks it is RF interference somehow and I am waiting for his call back as to what to do next. Other than that, it seems to work well. I like the rev limiter and not having to use a ballast resistor.

Check out this months "Hemmings Muscle Machines" mag as it has an article on just what you are saying about to rich at idle. Of course all the newer billet metering block carbs have jets for the idle restriction in the idle circuit but they even show how to remove the idle restriction bushing in the older Holley's and how to drill and tap it for a replaceable jet. I bought this as they don't offer an electric choke in a DP. its their 830, with mechanical secondaries and annular boosters with electric choke (we get colder weather here but still nice enough to drive around in dry spots during fall/winter which is why I wanted an electric choke)
