I just purchased a 69 charger with a 440 hp motor and will be restoring it. Previous owner said it original engine but i cant find pad with number stamp by pan. Im thinking it is a replacement engine or marine block. the distributor pad has d440 hp and is a 6430 cast number. can anybody give me help figuring out why no stamp pad.

I think the block you have is a 68. My numbers matching 383 for a GTS is D383 12-262. Engine built on Dec 26th second shift. Is there a pad on the oil pan rail? Also, if it is a 68 block, it may have stampings on the top of the block at the rear where the oil pressure switch is. Hope that helps

69' is when the pan rail stamping was in full swing. I think there may be a few 68'
cars with vin numbers on the block

Yeah, That's what I was thinking. If the pad is not there, then it may well be a 68, whether it is stamped like my 68 or not. Also, you should find an actual casting date on the side of the block.

If there is no pad, or no vin#, it Isn't Numbers matching. all 69's had the vin down by the pan rail. My 69's have all 13 digits there. A D440 is definitely not the original engine, It would be an E440HP for 1969.
