Done sanding now what

Afternoon guys,
I am pretty much done sanding my engine bay and just wondering what now? There's a couple spots that show bare metal and an area where the battery tray was that I ground down that had some pitting (its on a bend and not comfortable trying to patch it). I also ground the k frame down to bare metal, which is completely solid thanks to all the grease and oil protecting the original primer and paint lol. So basically my question should I epoxy primer the entire engine bay followed by a 2k primer then color/clear? I've never used epoxy nor did I know anything about it til I read Donny's post and the sticky earlier. That may be why my car is bubbling and rusting over the last 4 years in spots it never had issues over the last 45 years...
 
I have a similar thing with my car... perfect floor pans thanks to years of the previous owner just adding tranny fluid instead of fixing the leak lol
 
If you don't have any body work to do under the hood I would seal it off with epoxy primer then shoot the base/clear. I use epoxy primer for all priming.
 
Are you doing any plastic or lead work in there?

I sand the engine bay, inside the car, and underneath, do all my lead work (if there is pitting that you will see and the prime will not fill, fix it, figure an hour of lead work and its done, you will be surprised what them pits like after a couple coats of clear coat...

After its all fixed and sanded, tape the tops of your fenders and cowl (just outside the lip), I clean it really good with tsp, then let it dry out, then wipe it all down with a Galaxy cloth, then shoot it with primer, 2 coats...
Some people put base right on that, I have bad luck with doing that, so I let it dry, and I am never in a hurry, it a hobby..

After the primer is dry, I lightly scotch pad it (grey), make sure its covered good and everything is "STUCK", fast tsp wash, fast galaxy cloth again, and shoot the base./clear...

It works for me so far, time consuming, but it works and looks PERfeECT...
 
A year ago I epoxy primed my daughter's new fender and then sprayed B/C over it. Everything was sanded smooth first and cleaned and then applied the epoxy and I didn't scuff the epoxy before applying the B/C. So far so good.
 
The only body work that needs done is two spots on the inner fenders that have some pitting... I will probably wind up using a little filler there.
 
Anywhere you ground will likely leave marks that will be visible once painted, epoxy prime it, prime it and sand the scratches out before top coating. A guide coat is a good idea if your a novice, you can simply apply one coat of a different color primer or actual guide coat then once you start sanding the flaws will show up easily by the opposing color being left in the scratches and low spots. It's all in how nice you want it.
 
Scrub everything down with a good grease remover like deltron 330 or Dx 103 then shoot some primer your 2k or a polyester primer on the bare spots on the grinding scratchs or pits you can fill them with a good finish coat filler like feather fill ect sand the primer and filler smooth with 600 , scuff and wet sand the rest of the bay and K member with the 600 , mask and shoot with your epoxy primer/sealer after another wipe down with the grease & wax remover, epoxy sealer use Deltron DP 40 or 50 { grey } under light colored paint use DP 90 { black} under a dark color. if you color it the same day you will not need to scuff the sealer.
 
Epoxy and paint it,most people could give a crap if there are a few rust pits and imperfections under the hood.

Thanks, I understand. Just trying to do my best now. More worried about keeping the pitting from turning into a rusting, bubbling eyesore which it shouldn't.

Thanks, I sprayed everything and wiped it all down once the motor was out to prevent pushing the grease/grim around and will use a grease remover along with a tact before spraying. Any idea being in the engine bay if the heat will cause issues with a filler?

Thanks 747, I have not used a guide coat before but will try it after watching some videos on Eastwoods website they showed using a powder like product that I really liked. I've also seen something in a rattle can before.
 
The engine heat will not harm the filler.
Any sanding scratches you can see in the primer will show in the final color coat.
Any sanding scratches visible in your primer should be final sanded with at least 320 grit.
Depending on final color i will use at least 400 grit.

Will not be a problem on the heat , with no more filler than you will be adding, { pin holes , grinder marks, ect }. Everyone has their own way and ideas on this kind of stuff. Myself I cant paint over pin holes and scratchs if I know they are there.

Thanks, me too. I figured I'm this far why not take 5 minutes to lay filler...
Anyways, hopefully it warms up soon. It is suppose to be back into the 60's this week so I plan on trying to get at least the epoxy and primer on. I'll post pictures if I do.
 
Sorry I've been busy lately and haven't gotten a chance to post pictures. We had a couple nice days the end of January in the 60-70's where I was able to spray the epoxy and 2k high build. I do have a question though. I don't have as much plum crazy purple left over as I thought I did (half a pint) Should I buy a quart and be done with it or buy a gallon so when I do the exterior in the future (next year at the soonest) its the same mix/batch? I'm worried about it blending/matching but I understand there is a lot of variables that will play a part in it matching such as humidity and air pressure. So I'm not sure it will make much of a difference as it may or may not match regardless..?

Good job! I am working the same area but pulled the K in mine to boot. Haven't got up the courage to shoot anything yet being totally inept at painting with a gun. Could do it easy with a rattle can but the results would NOT be the match and quality of what a REAL painter will do. Thx
 
Thanks guys, it came out pretty good so far with minimal trash in the paint I think there was even a bug or two...In January...lol. I wound up spraying epoxy around 11am then added the filler that night. The next day I did some more sanding had a couple spots that were funny. If you notice in the picture with the black epoxy under where the battery tray would go there must have been oil or something... I'm not sure if I didn't clean it well enough with wax & grease remover but I wiped it real good sanded it and wiped it again. Then on the 3rd day I sprayed epoxy again to seal in the filler, followed by about 3-4 coats of 2k high build. I sprayed the K frame a Jet black gloss.
 
Well picked up a quart of PPG PCP and clear. Should be spraying tomorrow if all goes as planned, I'm actually on my way down to the garage to do some more wet sanding. It should be interesting as it will be my first time painting 100% on my own. So hopefully I don't screw up :eusa_whistle:..I know there can be a slight difference in color but for under the hood it shouldn't be real noticeable? Obviously, if I was painting a fender you'd probably notice it doesn't match the door or something.
 
As long as it is a close match it won't be super obvious like a door next to a fender.
Just pay attention to the tech sheets and use proper reducer for the temp and you should be ok.
