Has anyone used Race-Gas additive to increase the octane of the normal pump gas we get. In CA I only see 91 octane and my car is thirsty for more.

i know there are other additives out there and I'd like to hear about those as well - but I specifically would like to know about Race-Gas users. Good, bad, or indifferent.

Shipping the GTX to CA in a couple of months and want to know how to fuel it.

what compression ? 10 to 1 "should run fine on 91-93 with the timing set properly. My 472 hemi runs great on 93 with no additives...11-1 and higher will need more but I don't support high compression for a "driver"
 
Higher compression can work on pump gas with the right cam and tune. What is yours? I used to add a gallon of av gas to a tank of 93 with a 10.5-1 340. My cam was pretty mild so it built a lot of cylinder pressure in the lower rpm range. What kind of PSI readings do you get from a compression test?

I too live in California and I run the 5 gallon can of VP Racing fuel, 110 octane in my tanks.

Thx Ski - where do you get it and how do you mix it? Are you saying 5 gallons of VP to a full tank of gas? How much does a 5 gallon can cost?

Race-Gas additive is $30 a quart and the mixture for our gas would be 2 oz per gallon of 91 octane.
 
Without knowing what your numbers are, it's kinda hard to tell you what it needs. Like I mentioned with mine, 1 gallon of av gas(iirc, it was 100 octane)on top of a nearly full tank did the trick for my 10.5-1 340. With a 11.2-1 440 I mix 50/50 of 110 and pump 93 and that was probably a heavy mix with the cam it ran.

Where I live, it is available at the Local ACE Hardware store but NAPA and certain auto Parts stores carry it.
-I simply add 5 gallons to my tank.

BUT: Perhaps "WE" had better re-read Cranky's Post #6
So:
1. Try as Cranky & I mentioned, 5 Gallon VP 110 to a Tank
2. Drive and "Listen for ping"
3. Experiment.

I get mine at Superior Automotive in Placentia Ca. They race Mopars and I take mine there for Dyno Tuning...714.503.1880 Don or Arlene
 
California Pump Gas Suck's Thats why I've been contemplating switching to E85 octane is 112 at the pump and less than $3 per gallon, problem here in California is locating stations that Carry it, in the desert there's none, but if you Google E85 Gas-stations in Los Angeles there plentiful !!

The heartbeat of the car is a 440 bored 30 over to a 494. The compression ratio is 10.5 - 1. I don't have the specs on the cam. They're on some paper work that's in the car - to shipped out to me shortly. I'm trying to prepare for it and I know our special blend 91 oct. is not good enough so I'm trying to see what you Oracles use for a boost. I've heard there's all kinds of octane boosters that don't work real well. I've heard of Race-Gas but have. It used it. It sounds like you guys use VP and it's more readily accessible. Does the compression ratio I gave help with how much to a gallon/tank?

I use VP 110 not just for the octane but the better quality of the fuel and no ethanol. Once engine is tuned correctly you can mix with lower octane fuel to save money. Usually just 5 gal. per tank is good for me. I mix it with ethanol free 89 octane. Puts me around 95 octane and no ethanol. I have a few stations around me that sell it at the pump. You could try an internet search to see where it is available around you. My cylinder pressure is 180 cranking pressure and 120 running, iron heads. If I run straight pump gas 93, I have to retard the timing a couple degrees and you can feel a drop off in power and response.
 
I used Torco on a boosted Cobra. The mix I used brought 93 up to 98. Supposedly. Never any issues with it but I'd still say race gas is better. lol

If I had to use an octane booster it would be the only one I would buy. In the end to get the same octane as a race fuel it would cost twice as much. Still might be an option if high octagon fuel is not available.
 
Once you get the car out here it would probably be helpful to check the cranking compression to see where you are at to start with.

Goods points....

I use the torco additive and have been pleased with the octane boost.
 
those octane adders work better on low octane fuels than on higher octane fuels and even that's marginal. at 10.5 and iron heads, assuming no quench, you better get the 5 gallon buckets.

Would you use the additives with 87 or 91 octane - which are basically the 2 choices we have CA. If they work better with lower octane is using 87 okay?
 
It is "suppose" to lower end burn temperature for efficiency and added performance....
I agree the boost may not be equivalent to 100 plus....

I would prefer to use aviation fuel but no one here will sell to the public for road use, total bs....
