Success !! Yesterday was the start up and break in of the new 383 in the GTS. It started right up after a few cranks, as I filled the carb bowls. No strange noises , good oil pressure @ 50lbs.
Only issue was a leaking fuel line clamp. So , shut it down after about a minute and fixed leak. Started back up and ran at 2000 rpms for 20 mins to break in cam. Temp gauge was inop . So I used infered heat detector gun on all the surfaces. Never found a temp over 190 on the engine or radiator. Exhaust temps at head stayed around 550 on each cylinder. I'm real happy with the way that all went. Will get back out there today after Church to mess with it some more. Got a scare though after several cool downs and start ups. I was reving engine when all of a sudden I got water flying (reason not to use anti freeze initially) everywhere. Quick , shut it down. Only to find out that a freeze plug in the front of the left cylinder head popped out. Easy, fix, easy to get to. Lucky Me. Might have to put heavier springs in the dist to keep advance from happening too soon. Checked to see that it goes in gear (new 727, I built). No problem there. Wanted to take it down the street in my neighborhood to check shifting. But it SNOWED most of the day yesterday. Now its 19deg outside. Maybe ride in a few days.

Way to go Mitch. It sounds great ! Glad to hear the cam broke in fine. I hope you have been well and I want to tell you again how much I appreciated the tow you gave me to MIR a year and half or so ago. I hope one day I can repay the favor. Take care and keep us posted on that cool Dart. Ron

sounds good Mitch...I will have to pop over to FABO to check some pics.

Thanks Guys. Ooops might be for real though. I heard an irritating tap not long after start up. Engine has run now for probably an hour. I assumed that a rocker adjuster needed attention. So, I pulled the left cover first, and immediately saw the issue. The front #1 and #3 rockers and shaft were blue. I could move the #1ex rocker on the shaft. So. obviously I pulled it apart and could see where the shaft and rockers had been starved for oil. But, there was oil everywhere laying in the head. Pulled the other side and found no Issue at all, even after disassembling the shaft on the right. The left shaft and rockers were galled badly, and are toast. I do believe that the shafts are oiling properly, but somehow the left didn't get oil quick enough. Like I said, I started and stopped it at least a dozen times with 50psi and even ran the Rpm's up a few times. Anyhow, Waiting on a new shaft and ductile rockers now. And a BIG shout out to KhryslerKid who is sending me a set of VC's I can cut the tops out of. Plan is to reassemble using Joe Gibbs Assembly lube, install open VC's, Re-prime engine oil system and fire up while I can see and verify that BOTH sides are oiling properly. Fingers Crossed.

Watch the location of the oil holes in the shaft. They could be on backwards. Holes are off center and should be pointing down and toward the valves.
