Attention Chrome Ignition Box users

Let us know what you think of them. I just bought the same set up for both my cars, but won't be able to test them until spring.
okie doke. i wanted the rev limiter more than anything. i didn't want to go back to that msd style wiring mess around the coil or have some ugly box screwed to who knows where. i've used FBO stuff before without any issue. very clean, very simple.

I've used the FBO setup for about a year now and am very happy with it. Tried the orange and chrome box but was most satisfied with the FBO box with the rev limiter.

Doing a little quick math I'd guess that the overlap on that cam is less than 70 degrees. Do you have any numbers for when the intake closes and exhaust opens by chance? It sure runs good!

Yes I do but I gotta dig up the cam card. I have it put away and will dig it out as soon as I can since I forgot the intake valve closing number. Ron

I have the Rev N Nator and it is a great unit with built in rev limiter and underhood tach.

Ok Jeramiah I got my cam card and the valve timing at .050 has the intake valve closes at 58 degrees after bottom dead center and opens 26 degrees before top dead center. The exh valve opens at 69 degrees before bottom dead center and closes 21 degrees after top dead center. Hope that helps you. Looks like 47 degrees overlap @ .050. Ron

I went from dead orange box to chrome, timing needs were vastly different when I swapped boxes but otherwise the chrome outperforms it. Now I keep the chrome as a backup for a rev-n-nator.

Thank you Ron! I am trying to test the theory of the multiple spark at or below 3000 RPM cleaning up the idle on cams with 70+ degrees of overlap. Now I have six points of data lol.

I had a RevNnator and ended up selling it. The dang thing knocked and pinged at the usual timing setting. I backed it off to stop the knock but then it was too sluggish at low engine speeds. At the time, i didn't know how easy my MP distributor was to recurve.

I have the super easy to recurve Firecore distributor to go with my Rev N Nator. They work really well together.

i got away from the msd/jacobs gadget boxes years ago. i think they have a place but not on my cars. when i did a track test and dyno test back to back and seen no difference for the money and wiring hassle i went back to the factory inductive systems.

It has been noted before that there is almost a zero difference in the 1/4 mile drag strip times with these boxes. The benny in the multi spark boxes is better low end and normally Hwy. mileage.

Don't know if this helps or may be a possible cause to the OP's box failure.
Per MP application chart, the chrome P4120534 box is mated to P3690560 coil and P2444641 ballast. Also has a side "note not for prolonged use under 2000 rpm".
Sounds like the Gold box description.

Tell me about your Firecore.

installed the FBO rev-limiter box and coil this morning. very straight forward. typical no nonsense FBO stuff. started right up. seemed to drive pretty smooth, maybe smoother than the FBO black box. no big boxes screwed to the firewall or inner fenders. no stupid stand off wiring hanging off the side of the coil. i didn't push the engine against the rev-limiter; save that for later.

I have a msd 6 that has been in continous use on several cars for around 30 years. I also have a digital 7 that.....I wont talk about. I still like and use Autotronics parts. With magnetoes I favor Mallory. Remember to give all your electronics their best shot at being dependable by mounting in as cool a location as possible.

Tell me about your Firecore.

I have the Firecore Plug and Play Distributor and it swaps into an existing harness and plugs directly into a chrome/orange box or in my case the Rev N Nator. The mechanical advance mechanism is totally and easily adjusted using two phillips screws and also comes with springs to super fine tune if needed.

Do you run vacuum advance with your rev n nator?

No, the Rev N Nator manufacturer doesn't recommend using a vacuum advance but some have used it with success.

had my orange box since 2002 about 15000 miles on it hope it lasts longer, but I carry a spare original stock unit along with many other spare parts.

does the revenator actually make a difference with a 318 engine?

I believe the problem is the harness. The mopar ignition key has two voltage feeds. Feed 1, ignition with the key in run, but dead in crank. Feed 2 hot in crank only. The box only uses one input for ignition. Therefore if it ran the box functioned. My bet is it has feed 2 only (brown wire from ignition switch). It also needs the dark blue wire tied in.

did you have to do a different firing order with the Firecore unit or the normal stock order? I have stock firing order with Firecore plug and play and MP chrome box and the timing for initial seems really high...it likes 20-22 degrees initial. Motor misses at idle too. Pings funny under load. Tuning issues for sure, but need some intel to help me out...

I just checked the Firecore instructions that came with my dizzy and it is the same as for a stock MP dizzy:

Since you sold the Rev-N-ator, which ECU box did you end up successfully running? I'm currently running the MP chrome box with a Firecore plug and play distributor (not their Ready to run unit, although I have one new in the box I was going to use and changed my mind), as well as a Firecore oil filled coil. Wondering if a different ECU box like the FBO (4secondsflat) would be better with the firecore setup.

I have read that the majority of failures occur with the orange boxes, not the chrome or gold ones.
