argument with engine building bud.. he says mopar did not make a forged 400, says what I have is a 383 crank in there.....I say they made a 400 forged crank 400... the 383 crank is a drop in, the 400 would have different rod #'s...... just wondering??

Some early 400's were said to come with forged cranks but so far, but did some of those make it into trucks? I've never ran across one. Why would the rod have different numbers on them for that?

Aint worth the effort to debate it. Besides, never argue with the cook before he cooks your meal....

I did find an old ( older than me) retired moopar mechanic. he said some trucks did come with a 400 forged steel crank engine and I foud a #'s list that showed a truck with steel 400 crank. I was just wondering as another mopar friend that builds a lot of engines said No. really doesn't matter t me .

What’s the easiest way to tell the difference (cast vs forged)? The reason I ask is because I have a (’78?) 400 truck motor and there are no balancing weights on the torque converter. I’ll take a look again and also take a look at what the vibration damper looks like.

If you post a picture of the damper then this should be a good indicator of cast versus forged.
