My 69 Charger has a 440 with a Mopar Wedge aluminum intake. The aftermarket Mopar air cleaner that I got with the car hits the bottom of the hood. The air cleaner measures about 3 1/4" tall with a flat bottom plate. Anyone have a suggestion on a thinner profile air cleaner that won't hit the hood?

What size air cleaner element are you looking for? From what you write, it sounds like you may have the 12 3/4 mopar element that is 2.75 inches high.

I did a quick search on Summit and sorted by air cleaner size. There are a few 13 inch elements that range from 2.3 to 2.5 inches high (K&N E2865, Hastings AF311, Green Filter 5112). I have no experience with the 13 inch elements in the Mopar cleaner assy but read somewhere that they can be made to fit.

Alternatively, I have heard that some have used spacers plus drop bases to make things clear, or offset drop bases. I am using a 16 inch cleaner assy. from keyser manufacturing, but it is to clear a 4150 and for a more significant drop so I don't have to make my cleaner too short with the raised intake. I do not know if any of these will work. They may not, but I put them out there for consideration.

Put a banjo fitting on the carb and then a drop base should fit - be careful about what size air filter you use - there are specs for the air flow - a 14" air cleaner for a 440 needs a 3" tall filter - if it's a MOPAR air cleaner - instead of the 2-3/4" one that's standard, those need a 3-1/4" tall to flow at WOT... I just reconfigured the air cleaner that was on my car when I got it - a 14" diameter - 2" tall one - that's restrictive at higher RPMs - breathes much better with the 3" air filter element in it.

It's hard to tell how much shorter the air cleaner needs to be. The current filter is a 2 3/4" one. The first time I installed it and shut the hood it made the back edge of the hood stick up about a half inch. I sent the info to Summit to see what they have to offer in a different base that might clear the fuel line. I'll lower the fuel outlet if I have to to make a drop base work. Thanks for the input.

Thanks for the ideas.
